The Christmas markets in the Old Town Square and Wenceslas Square are a must-visit, with their charming stalls selling traditional Czech foods, crafts, and gifts.
The historic architecture of the city is even more beautiful when it’s dusted with snow, and the Prague Castle is particularly impressive when it’s illuminated with holiday lights.

The Christmas markets in Vörösmarty Square and St. Stephen’s Basilica are a must-visit, with their charming stalls selling traditional Hungarian foods, crafts, and gifts. You should also check out some of the most romantic things to do in Budapest before you go.
The city’s thermal baths are also a perfect way to warm up on a cold winter day. The thermal baths are iconic in the city, and you have to experience them when you come here. By far the best time to do that is during the winter when it’s such a warming treat.

#9 Combloux, France
Combloux ski resort in December can be a great destination for winter sports enthusiasts. December is usually the beginning of the winter season in the French Alps, and Combloux is a popular ski resort that offers a variety of winter activities.
We actually spent a whole ski season here, from December through to March, and it was incredible. It was way more affordable than a lot of the more well known French ski resorts, but it was also big enough to stay fresh all winter.
In December, the weather in Combloux can be quite cold, with average temperatures ranging from -2°C to 5°C (28°F to 41°F). Snowfall is also common during this time, making it perfect for skiing, snowboarding, and other winter sports.
Combloux has more than 100 km of ski slopes, suitable for skiers and snowboarders of all levels. There are also several ski schools and rental shops in the area, so even beginners can enjoy the slopes. In addition to skiing, you can also try snowshoeing, ice skating, and sledding.
The town of Combloux itself is a charming mountain village with traditional architecture and stunning views of Mont Blanc. There are several restaurants, bars, and shops where you can enjoy local cuisine and purchase souvenirs. It’s not huge, but you can visit nearby Megeve if you want a bit more action.

Reykjavik may be chilly in December, but it’s also one of the best places to see the Northern Lights. The winter months are when you’re most likely to see the northern lights so December is the perfect time to visit.
If you’re there to see the northern lights then we highly recommend you book onto a trip. The guides know the best places to see them and the best nights to look out for them. We were very impressed with the tour, and we got some awesome photos just outside of the city.
You can also sometimes spot them from the city itself, and we were lucky enough to see them here, but it is a little less impressive due to more light pollution. Head to the harbour for your best chance of seeing them!
The city’s Christmas market at Ingolfstorg Square is a must-visit, and there are plenty of winter activities to enjoy, including ice-skating and snowmobiling.

#11 Europe In December: Visit Rome, Italy
December is an interesting time to visit Rome, and in fact one of the best times to visit Italy. The weather can be cold, with average temperatures ranging between 4-14°C (39-57°F), but the city is filled with Christmas festivities and decorations, creating a unique and magical atmosphere.
We were there at the very end of December, between Christmas and new year, and we highly recommend a visit here over the new years festivities. There are numerous firework displays over iconic monuments like the colosseum and they’re really special to watch.

Lisbon may not be the first destination that comes to mind when you think of Europe in December, but it’s a charming and festive city during the holiday season.
The city’s Christmas markets and decorations are a must-see, and there are plenty of winter activities to enjoy, including ice-skating and holiday concerts.
While you’re here make sure you book a tour to visit the iconic city of Sintra. This is as close to Disney as you’ll get in Spain, only this isn’t a fairytale!

Bucharest may not be as famous as other European destinations, but it’s a charming and affordable destination in December. Bucharest was a real surprise for us, as we didn’t have high expectations, but there are some really great things to do here over winter.
The city’s Christmas markets are a must-visit, and the stunning decorations on Piata Unirii and Piata Victoriei are not to be missed. Don’t forget to try some traditional Romanian foods, including sarmale and mici.
If you have time we would highly recommend you book a day trip to visit Dracula’s castle. The Romanian countryside is breathtaking, and the castle itself will blow your mind. Just make sure you book in advance as these tours sell out quick.

Obviously this depends somewhat on where about in Europe you’re going and what activities you have planned, but some of the things you’ll need are very similar for all European destinations.
We would recommend lots of layers. You will find variable weather in the winter months and having the option to add or remove clothing throughout the day is going to be a lifesaver.
Make sure you pack a quality insulating layer and this should see you through all sorts of weather. You can layer it with a stylish coat, or wear a nice dress under it for meals out, but while you’re out in the elements a decent insulating layer will keep you warm and dry.
