Winter days can be spent strolling from cafe to cafe, topping up on hot chocolates and mulled wines. You can schedule in a trip to one of Budapest’s famous natural spring spas to warm up. The Most Romantic Things To Do In Budapest
#1. Take An Evening Stroll
Budapest just oozes romance, so there’s really no need to force it. Walk hand in hand along the Danube River at night and see the city at it’s finest, with the glow of the evening lights reflecting in the river and the buzz of activity all around. It’s romantic and it’s free (though maybe don’t boast about that to your date!)
Another great place to stroll through at night is Buda old town. The beautiful ancient buildings and cute little alleyways look so romantic in the evening street lamps and there are candle lit windows in all of the restaurants and cafes. It’s definitely one of the top romantic things to do in Budapest!
#2 Cosy Up With A Book
In my opinion the Szabo Ervin Library is one of the most romantic places in Budapest, but maybe that’s just because I’m a sucker for books.
On the forth floor is where the magic really happens, as the entire floor is preserved in it’s original state. It’s just like something out of Beauty and the Beast, and I had to control my inner Belle to prevent myself from swinging across the room on the ladders. Cuddle up together with a classic and watch the world go by from the impressive windows. Head here for something a little different to do with the one you love.
#3 Stroll Hand In Hand Across Chain Bridge
The famous Chain Bridge opened in 1849, after the Hungarian Revolution of 1848, and was the first permanent bridge in the Hungarian capital. Not only is it steeped in history, but it’s also beautifully romantic, especially when you’re walking down it hand in hand with the one you love.
#4 Get Your Heart Racing
For the more adventurous couples among you, going caving is the perfect romantic thing to do in Budapest. This award winning trip will take you into the longest cave tunnel system under the streets of Budapest!
It’s a little scary at times (and will definitely get that adrenaline flowing!) but what better way to bond than through supporting each other around this adult assault course. You will come back smiling from this activity for sure.
#5 Date Night At A Ruin Bar
Budapest’s ruin bars are bars set up inside derelict, pre-war buildings that barely escaped the bulldozers. They were first started by some inventive locals, who couldn’t bare to see the buildings knocked down. These places now serve cheap drinks in the quirkiest of bars. Szimpla Kert was the cities first ruin bar and has become a major tourist attraction, but it’s still worth a visit for the experience and is something a little different to do on a romantic night out in Budapest, and you have to tick off at least one of Budapest’s unusual hidden gems while you’re here!
#6 Get Romantic In Budapest At A Thermal Spa
The Gellert thermal baths are one of the most romantic things to do in Budapest for couples. Budapest is famous for it’s thermal baths, but if you’re looking for romance then none compete with Gellert.
Gellert Bath opened in 1918 and is still going strong today. It uses the same deep underground springs that the Knights of St John used in the 12th century, and is famous for it’s stunning architecture and warm natural spring pools. You could easily spend a day here discovering all the different pools, and treating yourselves to a couples massage or three (the prices are so reasonable you’re bound to be back for more!).
It’s one of the most popular romantic things to do in Budapest, and we can see why!
#7 Take A Romantic Boat Tour
One of the most romantic things to do in Budapest is take a cruise along the River Danube. Budapest’s famous landmarks like the Parliament, Buda Castle and Matthias Church are even more perfect when viewed from the river. If you’re looking for something romantic to do in Budapest then why not take a river cruise together.
There are so many different types of cruise to choose from that you are certain to find something perfect for you and the one you love. From budget cruises to romantic candlelit dinner cruises with a 4 course meal and local Hungarian entertainment, Budapest has got you covered.
Visiting this romantic city on Valentines day? Then not to worry, there are even special Valentines Day cruises put on just for the special day. Choose between a wine tasting cruise (yes please!), or a romantic candle lit dinner cruise, and obviously the most incredible views. Just don’t go for the party cruise if romantic and intimate is what you’re after!
For the ultimate in luxury, book a trip on a mahogany speed boat for two and see Budapest in style.
#8 Picnic At The Most Romantic Place In Budapest
According to the locals Margaret Island is the most romantic place in the whole city. It’s the perfect place to head to for a little peace and tranquillity, and a little private time as a couple. Take a picnic here and make a day of it. This old royal hunting ground is the perfect place for romantic walks around manicured gardens filled with spring time flowers. Or you explore the medieval ruins or listen to the musical fountain. In summer there are even open-air concerts and cinema nights, though you will need to book tickets in advance.
The easiest way to get to the Margitsziget is by public transport (tram #4 or #6) or taking a taxi.
#9 Watching the sunrise or sunset from the top of Gellert Hill
Is there anything more romantic than a beautiful sunrise or sunset? Yes, there’s sunrise or sunset with the view from Gellert Hill. You don’t need a ticket to get up here, so you can come at any time of day. Why not head up there with a picnic breakfast or supper and a cosy blanket to snuggle under with the one you love.
The best thing about this romantic experience in Budapest-it’s completely free!
#10 Chocolate Tasting For Lovers
Not feeling sweet enough already? Why not feed each other divine chocolates at the chocolate museum. Complete with its very own chocolate fountain, sweet traditional liquors and a whole lot of chocolate related history, this afternoon out is bound to sweeten up your loved one! You will have a go at making your own chocolate, and even be treated to hot chocolate, speciality tea and cookies! And yes, this outing will definitely spoil your appetite, so don’t plan dinner straight after.
You even get to take home a goodie bag of chocolate for later (we don’t want to know what you do with it!)
#11 Explore Buda Castle District
This has to be one of the prettiest areas of Budapest, and definitely one of the most romantic. Explore the quaint cobblestone streets to uncover historic landmarks such as The Royal Palace and Matthias Church. Fisherman’s Bastion was one of my favourite romantic spots, a beautiful framed viewpoint over the city. Get here at sunset to really set the romance up a notch. There are so many romantic things to do in Budapest that won’t cost you a penny.
If you have time, make sure you visit some of the interesting museums, such as The Castle Museum. There are also a number of cute looking cafes and restaurants, a lot of them with beautiful views onto the charming streets.
#12 Enjoy A Concert, One Of The Most Romantic Things To Do In Budapest
You will be spoilt for choice of you’re trying to decide on some romantic evening entertainment for you and your loved one. Budapest has some of the best concert halls in the world, and music to match.
Enjoy a performance by the acclaimed Danube Symphony Orchestra in beautiful surroundings, or treat yourself to a show at the impressive Budapest Opera House. The inside of these concert halls are romantic enough, add music and what can we say!
If you’re after something a little less traditionally romantic then why not head to a concert on the A38 ship docked on the Danube. This commercial-ship-turned-concert-venue is one of those unique Budapest inventions that you will only find here. The venue hosts a range of different artists, from big names to local bands. The great thing is that there is something going on almost every night of the week, so take a look and see if something takes your fancy!
#13 Take A Ride On The Ferris Wheel Of Budapest
The ride that will take your relationship to new heights, quite literally. This may well be one of the most romantic things to do in Budapest. The Budapest ferris wheel offers the most incredible views over the city, and gives a perfect aerial view of St Stephen’s Basilica.
Top Tip: Try going at quiet times of the day week and you might even get a car all to yourselves! What an excuse to squeeze up close to the one you love!
#14 Travel back in time at a coffeehouse
Like Vienna, Budapest also revelled in a buzzing coffeehouse culture in the late 19th century. Poets and play writes would flock into these grand, beautifully decorated coffeehouses to write and socialise, and luckily some of them have survived and can be enjoyed today. The beautiful interiors of these buildings make them a pretty spectacular place to enjoy tea and cake, and there is always romance in history. Perhaps you will be sharing cake for two in the very same place that a poet poured out his soul back in the day.
Hopefully you’re now full of inspiration and in the mood for love! As you can see, the most romantic things to do in Budapest don’t have to be expensive, but it’s also the perfect place for a little luxury with the one you love! We hope you have a love-ly time here.
