Day 1: Arrival and Exploring Fira
✔ Don’t forget your travel insurance! We use Safety Wing and highly recommend it. With insurance designed for frequent travelers and digital nomads, it ticks all the right boxes. ✔
For the first of your 4 day Santorini itinerary head to Fira, the capital of Santorini. It’s a vibrant and bustling town that offers plenty of things to do and see.
It’s a convenient first stop as Fira is where you’ll land if you’re heading here by ferry. Most people opt to stay in Fira for convenience, but you should also consider accommodation in the equally as beautiful Oia. We’ve included some great options below, but TOP PICK
There are numerous things to keep you busy for the day in Fira, but here are some absolute must-dos so you don’t miss out on the best stuff!
#1 Take a stroll through the alleys

✅ If you want it all done for you then we highly recommend this tour of Santorini, which includes some of the top sights, wine tasting, and a trip to Oia village too.
Fira is famous for its narrow alleys, lined with shops, cafes, and restaurants. Take a leisurely stroll through the alleys, stopping to admire the stunning views of the Aegean Sea and the caldera.
This is a great place to shop for anything you might have forgotten for the days ahead. You’ll find things like pretty beach towels and sun hats a plenty.
Make sure you keep your camera at the ready, because so many of the little pathways pop out onto awesome views.
#2 Visit the Archaeological Museum of Thera
You might not think of Santorini as somewhere with a lot of history, but you’ll be pleasantly surprised to know that this Greek island is steeped in it. Make sure you pop into the Archaeological Museum of Thera to find out more.
This museum houses artifacts from the ancient civilization of Thera, which dates back to the 3rd millennium BC. See ancient pottery, sculptures, and other objects that offer insights into the island’s rich history.
We’re not huge on museums but this one is really interesting and well worth an hour of your time. It’s the perfect place to get a little shade from the mid-day heat.
#3 Watch the sunset over the Caldera

Fira offers some of the best sunset views on the island because it looks out directly onto it. Head to one of the many rooftop bars and restaurants to enjoy a cocktail and watch the sun dip below the horizon.
Here are some of the best places from which to watch the sunset in Fira.
- The Three Bells of Fira: Located at the top of the cliff overlooking the caldera, the Three Bells of Fira is one of the most iconic spots to watch the sunset in Fira. You can sit on the steps of the church and enjoy the panoramic views of the caldera and the Aegean Sea.
- Franco’s Bar: This rooftop bar is located on the edge of the caldera and offers stunning views of the sunset. It is a great spot to enjoy a cocktail and watch the sun dip below the horizon.
- PK Cocktail Bar: Located near the cable car station, PK Cocktail Bar offers unobstructed views of the caldera and the sunset. The bar serves a variety of cocktails and snacks, making it the perfect spot for a sunset drink.
- Hotel Atlantis: This hotel is located on the highest point of Fira and offers panoramic views of the sunset. You can enjoy a drink on the terrace while watching the sun paint the sky with vibrant colors.
Because watching the sunset here has become so iconic you can expect to share the show with a bit of a crowd.
This can really add to the atmosphere, so try not to get too frustrated with the many people trying to ruin your shot!
#4 Take a cable car ride
Fira is located on the edge of the caldera, and one of the best ways to get down to the port is by taking a cable car ride. The ride offers stunning views of the sea and the surrounding islands.
Sadly we didn’t get the chance to try this but we will certainly be jumping into a car when we come back again. Friends said it was the best thing they did in Fira, so make sure you don’t miss out (and leave with regret like us!)
Be warned, this isn’t the best trip to take if you’re scared of heights!
You can expect to pay around 6 euros for a one-way ticket.
Day 2: Catamaran Cruise

🏆 This is the catamaran trip we highly recommend 🏆
One of the best ways to explore the coastline is by taking a Santorini catamaran cruise of the island. We absolutely love catamarans (good job, since we just bought one to be our home!) but they’re also the perfect vessel for boat trips.
Catamarans are some of the most spacious sailing boats out there, so they’re great for group trips. You won’t feel too squashed in. They are pretty stable compared to other boats so they’re a good choice for people who suffer from seasickness, and an especially good choice for sailing in Santorini which is known for its meltemi winds.
Plus, everyone loves the trampolines on the front for some dolphin watching. There are some large pods around Santorini so you’re in with a pretty good chance of seeing some (we were lucky and got several sightings).
Most catamaran cruises will include various stop-offs at some of the most beautiful bays, including Santorini’s black sand beaches.
You’ll have the chance to jump off and cool down, and some tours include the use of water toys like paddle boards for you to do some exploring of your own. Bring snorkelling gear if you want to get a glimpse of the underwater life here – the water is crystal clear. There are lots of daytime cruises out there but this is the one we recommend.
If you’re after something a little more romantic then consider taking a sunset cruise, where you’ll be wined and dined as the cliffs turn golden in your own little slice of paradise.
Day 3: Exploring the Villages of the Island

Aside from the bigger towns of Fira and Oia, Santorini has some picturesque villages that are begging to be explored on your 4 days in Santorini.
Note: You’ll probably want to hire a car for the day so you can explore without time constraints. We used Discover Car to book the cheapest rental.
Each village has its unique charm and beauty, making them a must-visit when exploring the island. Here are some of the best villages to explore in Santorini:
Pyrgos: Pyrgos is a traditional village that is located in the center of the island. The village is famous for its Venetian castle, narrow streets, and traditional houses. Pyrgos is less touristy than other villages, making it a great place to experience the island’s authentic culture.
Emporio: This village is famous for its traditional architecture, narrow streets, and charming squares. Emporio is also home to the famous Kastelli Castle, which offers stunning views of the island.
Akrotiri: Akrotiri is a village that is located on the southern part of the island and is famous for its archaeological site. The site is home to ancient ruins and offers a glimpse into the island’s history and culture. Akrotiri is also known for its stunning beaches and crystal-clear waters.
As you have a car, you might also want to visit some of Santorini’s famous black sand beaches (and Santorini’s pink sand beach, which is really red!) Pick one nearby to stop for lunch or dinner.
Exploring Santorini’s villages is a great way to experience the island’s culture, history, and beauty. Each village has its unique charm and offers something different, making it a must-visit when exploring the island.
Day 4 Of 4 Days In Santorini: Discovering Oia and Take A Sunset Helicopter Ride
Take The Ride Of Your Life
Santorini is a dream destination, and what better way to celebrate the holiday of a lifetime than by indulging in a helicopter tour of the island?
The best Santorini helicopter tours offer panoramic views of the caldera, the Aegean Sea, and the island’s stunning landscape. You can see the island from a unique perspective that is impossible to get from the ground. Most tours fly during the day, but some offer sunset flights if you want a little romance!
Visit Beautiful Oia

After seeing the island from the air, head to beautiful Oia for your last afternoon of exploring.
Oia is on the northern tip of Santorini. It is known for its white-washed buildings, blue-domed churches, and stunning sunset views. You have probably seen countless photos of Oia as it’s one of the most picturesque places on the island. It won’t disappoint!
Here are a few of the best things to do in Oia.
Explore the Village: Oia is a charming village with narrow streets, charming cafes, and traditional shops. It is a great place to explore and get lost in the maze-like streets.
Visit the Byzantine Castle Ruins: The Byzantine Castle Ruins offer stunning views of the village and the Aegean Sea. The ruins are located at the highest point of the village and offer a glimpse into the island’s history.
Hike to Amoudi Bay: Amoudi Bay is a small fishing village located at the base of Oia. You can reach it by hiking down the stairs from Oia. The hike is a bit challenging, but the views of the Aegean Sea and the caldera are breathtaking. Just bring some water for the hike back up again!
Visit the Maritime Museum: The Maritime Museum of Oia is a must-visit for history buffs. The museum showcases the island’s maritime history and culture through exhibits and artifacts.
Swim at Katharos Beach: If the catamaran boat trip didn’t give you your fill of ocean time then head to Katharos Beach, a small and secluded beach located near Oia. The beach is known for its crystal-clear waters and stunning views of the caldera.
Book a Santorini photo tour: What better way to capture memories forever. The flying dress photo shoot is one of the most popular things to do in Santorini, but there are lots of other ways to record your memories forever.
To end your 4 days in Santorini, watch the sunset from Oia’s Byzantine castle. You don’t get the direct view of the sun going down but the pinks and oranges of the sky with the incredible views are quite something!
Where To Stay In Santorini

There are two obvious choices of towns to stay in Santorini. Fira, which is the main town, and Oia, which is slightly smaller and some say more upmarket and luxurious (think honeymoon accommodation!)
Honestly, the hotels in Santorini are amazing. They are definitely worth splashing out on, especially for a short 4 night stay. Here are some of the best.
Stay In Fira
For easy access to everything, and some awesome restaurants, stay in Fira.
The Winery Hotel is a hidden gem in Fira, perfect for a romantic getaway or a relaxing vacation.
The hotel’s location is ideal for exploring Fira, with easy access to the local bus. However, the hotel is tucked away from the hustle and bustle of the main street, providing a peaceful and secluded environment.
We particularly loved the hotel’s incredible pool, which was the perfect place to relax and unwind. The stylish decor throughout the hotel was also impressive, and the bed was incredibly comfortable.
For an even more indulgent experience, we highly recommend booking a room with a hot tub, which adds an extra touch of luxury to your stay.
Astro Palace Hotel & Suites is a hidden gem nestled in a picturesque location, just a short stroll from Fira and the caldera. If you’re after true paradise, this luxurious hotel offers an array of top-notch amenities including a wellness centre, a refreshing swimming pool, and rooms with panoramic views of the Aegean Sea.
Some of the rooms also feature a spa bath or private pool (yes please!). Each room boasts a spacious balcony or terrace offering breath-taking views of the Aegean Sea.
Oia
Oia is known as the more luxurious town to stay in, with lots of honeymoon accommodations and an equally as pretty setting.
This is what you came to Santorini for! Hotels like this have made this island famous, and you’ve probably seen something similar plastered all over your Instagram page.
Book the villa with a private outdoor heated pool, where you swim through a cave into the most incredible views. You won’t want to leave! It’s even the perfect place to watch the sunset from.
If the pool doesn’t sell it for you then the rooms are true luxury, with soft white furnishings and modern bathrooms. We can’t recommend this place strongly enough.
Nestled atop the cliffs of Oia, the Katikies Hotel offers an unforgettable experience with breathtaking views of the Aegean Sea.
The hotel’s infinity pools are a highlight, providing you with sweeping views of the Caldera. We loved the private terrace – the perfect spot to enjoy the sea views and relax.
One of the hotel’s standout features is the American breakfast with champagne, which can be served in the privacy of your own room or on your private veranda.
The staff are friendly and attentive, providing excellent service and ensuring guests have an unforgettable stay. Overall, the Katikies Hotel is a must-visit for anyone looking for a truly luxurious and unforgettable experience in Santorini.
4 Days In Santorini: Top Tips

We’ve put together our top tips for visiting Santorini, one of the best islands of Greece. After living in Greece for four years we have some great suggestions on making your stay more comfortable.
How to Get Around Santorini
Santorini is a relatively small island, making it easy to get around by various modes of transportation. Here are some ways to get around Santorini:
- Car or Scooter Rental: Renting a car or scooter is a popular option for exploring Santorini’s villages and beaches. Many rental companies are available on the island, and rates are reasonable. However, note that Santorini’s roads can be narrow and steep, so be cautious if you choose this option. Personally, we would opt for a car!
- Public Bus: Santorini has a reliable and affordable public bus system that connects the main towns and villages on the island. Buses run frequently, and tickets can be purchased at the bus stations or from the bus driver.
- Taxi: Taxis are readily available on Santorini, and can be a convenient way to get around, especially if you’re short on time or traveling with a group. This is an expensive option though.
- Walking: Santorini’s villages are small and walkable, making walking a pleasant and leisurely way to explore the island. However, note that the island’s terrain is hilly, and walking can be tiring in the heat of the day. If you go during summer then hiking is probably the last thing you’ll want to be doing!
How to Get To/From the Airport
Santorini Airport, officially known as Thira Airport, is located on the eastern side of the island, near the village of Kamari.
Private Transfer
After your journey, the last thing you want to be faffing around with is working out the transport system here, so we would recommend you just book a transfer straight from the airport to your hotel.
You can get a quote when you book, and booking in advance is usually cheaper than getting a taxi on the day.
We used this shared transfer company (and ended up with a car to ourselves anyway!) They were there on time and dropped us right outside our hotel. It was super easy!
Rental Car
If you plan to rent a car during your stay in Santorini, you can pick up your rental car from the airport. Many car rental companies have offices at the airport, and it’s a convenient way to start your exploration of the island.
We rented a car for the day to explore some of the inland villages, but otherwise found we didn’t need one. If you’re staying for longer than 4 days then it would be really useful to have a car to explore, as the buses were tricky to navigate.
You can book a reliable car rental through Discover Car for competitive prices. They compare the prices of all the rentals available on the island, which we found really useful as the cheapest companies were ones we had never heard of.
Bus
Santorini’s public bus system connects the airport with the main towns and villages on the island. Bus tickets can be purchased at the airport or from the bus driver, and the journey takes around 20-30 minutes to reach Fira.
Greek buses are mostly reliable, though we did find we were waiting quite a long time for them to show up. This could well have been our mistake with the timetable, we’re certainly not fluent in Greek!
What To Pack For 4 Days In Santorini

Here are some essential items to pack for your trip:
- Light and Breathable Clothing: Santorini can get very hot during the summer months, so pack light and breathable clothing like cotton shirts, shorts, and dresses. Also, consider packing a lightweight jacket or cardigan for cooler evenings.
- Swimwear: Santorini is home to many stunning beaches, so don’t forget to pack your swimwear, beach towel, and sunscreen. A hat and sunglasses can also be helpful for protecting your face from the sun.
- Comfortable Shoes: Santorini’s villages and towns are best explored on foot, so pack comfortable walking shoes or sandals. Heels are no good on the cobblestones! You may also want to bring a pair of dressier shoes for evening activities.
- Camera or Smartphone: Santorini is famous for its breathtaking views and stunning sunsets, so make sure to bring a camera or smartphone with a good camera to capture these moments.
- Day Bag: A day bag or backpack is essential for carrying essentials like water, sunscreen, and your camera as you explore the island’s attractions. If you plan on taking a boat trip then consider bringing a dry bag too to keep your essentials safe. For solo travelers, a dry bag also means you can take your belongings for a swim if you don’t want to risk leaving them on the beach.
- Electrical Adaptor: Greece uses the European two-pin electrical sockets, so make sure to pack an adaptor if you are coming from a different region.
- Respectful Clothing: Greece is a conservative country, so when visiting churches or monasteries, it is important to wear respectful clothing that covers your shoulders and knees.

Best Time To Visit Santorini
To be honest, there isn’t really a ‘best time’ to visit Santorini. It’s beautiful all year and there are benefits to each different season.
Shoulder Season (May-June and September-October)
We visited during the shoulder season (May-June). The Meltemi winds hadn’t kicked in yet so the days were warm but not too hot, and the weather was great for hiking and exploring on foot.
The crowds were also thinner, which means you can enjoy the island’s sights and experiences without the throngs of tourists that descend upon the island in the summer.
The trouble with the shoulder seasons is that you might experience some rain and storms. The weather at this time can be temperamental! The sea also hasn’t had time to warm up in the spring, so you might want to bring a wetsuit for the water.
Summer (July and August)
Visiting Santorini in the summer months of July and August can also be a great experience, but keep in mind that it is peak season, and the island can get very crowded with tourists.
The weather is hot and sunny, perfect for enjoying the island’s beaches and outdoor activities, but be prepared for long lines and crowded streets.
The other thing to consider during the summer months is the wind. It can be pretty fierce, blowing 40+ knots. During the summer try to avoid beaches on the north side of the island if you don’t like your sandwiches sandy!
Winter (November – March)
If you’re looking to save some money on your trip, consider visiting Santorini during the winter months of November to March. While the weather may be cooler and some attractions may be closed, you can still enjoy the island’s beauty and charm without the crowds, and you may be able to find better deals on accommodations and activities.
In recent years it has even snowed in Santorini over the winter. This must be pretty cool to see!
Overall, the best time to visit Santorini depends on your preferences and priorities. If you prefer warm weather and crowds don’t bother you, then the summer months are a great time to visit. If you prefer cooler weather and quieter streets, then consider visiting during the shoulder seasons or winter months.
Is 4 Days In Santorini Enough?

While Santorini is a relatively small island, there are many things to see and do, and it’s easy to spend weeks exploring all that it has to offer. However, four days in Santorini can give you a good taste of what the island has to offer, especially if you plan your itinerary well.
We had five days here and were happy we had seen enough to get the highlights of this gorgeous island.
During four days in Santorini, you can explore the island’s beautiful villages, take in the stunning views, enjoy delicious Greek cuisine, and relax on the island’s unique black sand beaches.
You can also take a catamaran cruise, visit the ancient Akrotiri site, hike to the highest point on the island, and enjoy some of the island’s famous sunsets.
While four days may not be enough time to do everything, it’s enough to get a good sense of the island’s beauty and charm. If you’re short on time, it’s possible to see many of Santorini’s top attractions in just a few days, and you’ll leave with unforgettable memories of this beautiful island.
Conclusion: 4 Days In Santorini
In conclusion, spending 4 days in Santorini is the perfect way to experience the island’s beauty and charm. From exploring the villages of Oia and Fira, to watching the sunset over the caldera, to taking a helicopter tour and catamaran cruise, there is something for everyone to enjoy.
Visitors can indulge in the local cuisine, taste the excellent wines, and relax on the island’s stunning beaches. Whether you are traveling with family, friends, or a loved one, Santorini is the perfect destination for a memorable vacation.
It is no wonder why Santorini is one of the most sought-after destinations in Greece and even the world.
