The History Of Lion Rock In Sigiriya

Sigiriya Rock Fortress is an ancient rock fortress near the town of Dambulla in the Central Province of Sri Lanka. It is a site of huge historical and archaeological importance, built on a massive column of rock that’s nearly 200 metres high.
The site was selected by an ancient king as the place where he wanted his new capital to be built, and he chose the prime estate for his palace-the top of Sigiriya rock. It’s an impressive place for a palace but surely not the easiest spot to build on!
About halfway up the side of this rock he built a gateway in the form of an enormous lion, which is still in great condition to this day and you can stop there for a photo or three on your way up to the top.
The remains of the palace can be found at the very top of the rock. You will have to walk up one giant stair master to get there, but the views alone are worth it! It’s fascinating to walk around the ruins of the palace and imagine what an incredible place it must once have been.
Sigiriya is a UNESCO-listed World Heritage Site and one of the most visited places in Sri Lanka. We can see why!
How Was Lion Rock Formed?

A little geography for you! We were fascinated to find out that Sigiriya Rock was formed around 2 billion years ago!
It is a large block of molten magma that hardened and formed a plug in a volcano. Once you know what it is, it kind of makes sense! The whole area was once full of volcanoes, but these have now long gone, leaving only the towering Lion Rock and its smaller sister, Pidurangala Rock.
How To Get Lion Rock In Sigiriya
This depends on where you staying. We stayed in Sigiriya town itself and would highly recommend this option. We have included some potential options for you below to help you choose.
If you’re staying in Sigiriya
If you’re staying in Sigiriya town then you can take a tuk-tuk to the entrance gates. Arrange one the night before from the tuk-tuk parking area in town. If you’re feeling energetic then it’s more than possible to walk to Sigiriya Rock from most places in town. We’ve included a map below of the route you need to take.

If you’re staying further afield
If you’re staying in Polonnaruwa then a tuk-tuk or taxi is still a good option. You can book them for the whole day, and see more of the things to do in Sigiriya before you return.
Top tip: If you’re coming from elsewhere, like Columbo or Dambulla, then it may be worth taking a tour. There are numerous different options so you can find the perfect one to suit you, and they all include skip-the-queue tickets and a delicious lunch!
✅ This tour includes pick-up from your hotel, a tour of Polonnaruwa, tickets and tax, lunch and an English-speaking guide. We would have loved someone there to explain it all to us as we explored.
The Best Time To Visit Lion Rock

Our advice is to go early in the morning, as early in the morning as you can drag yourself out of bed! It gets very, very hot here, especially if it is the first place you have arrived and you aren’t yet acclimatised to the weather.
You really don’t want to be walking up Lion rock in the midday heat – as I mentioned before it is one huge staircase and will be pretty exhausting no matter what time of day you arrive. Save yourself a little sweating and get there early!
It also gets very busy, being one of the top things to do in Sigiriya, so try and beat the crowds by forgoing that lie in! Some of our friends visited later in the day and literally queued on the huge staircase to reach the top.
Opening Times And Entrance Fees
Entrance fee: 4,600 rupees / £30
Throughout most of the year, Sigiriya Rock is open from 7am till 5:30pm.
Our advice, as mentioned earlier, is to get there as early as possible to avoid both the heat and the crowds.
Where To Stay

The closest town to stay in for visiting Lion Rock is Sigiriya itself. This is a tiny but beautiful place with a lot of local charm.
✅ Nethmi Home Stay is a great budget option if you’re looking to stay quite near Lion Rock. Rooms start from £8 a night and the accommodation has a garden to relax in and WiFi.
✅ Il Frangipane is a little more up market, with an outdoor swimming pool, luxurious rooms and its own restaurant. Expect to pay around £40 a night.

Climbing Lion Rock – A Whole Lot Of Up

Climbing Lion Rock in Sigiriya does require a little (lot of) exercise!
It took us around an hour to reach the lion statue, and then a lot of faffing taking photos and taking in the views at the top. The whole trip took us about three hours in total.
You could easily spend longer here and likewise, you could rush around in less! If you are short on time then try to spend a little less time here, as there are so many other great things to do in Sigiriya that you will want to really maximise your time!
Top tip: Check public holiday dates as this place can get really busy. We heard of tourists standing in one huge staircase queue to reach the top, which wouldn’t be much fun in the unforgiving sun. As we were leaving it started getting a lot busier too, another reason why earlier is better!
Top Tips For Visiting Lion Rock In Sigiriya

Cover up
Lion Rock isn’t a place of religious worship, so covering up isn’t necessary. That being said, there isn’t much shelter at certain times of the day, so it might be handy to have something to protect yourself from the sun.
Also, if you plan on going straight to Polonnaruwa afterwards then you will need to wear clothes that are appropriate for visiting religious temples.
Wear walking shoes
We recommend you wear shoes you can walk in, the stairs are uneven at times and there are a lot of them! It’s hard to get the balance between feeling cool and being comfortable, but this is definitely the time to wear those walking shoes or trainers.
Bring sun protection
Bring sun cream, a sunhat and something light to cover yourself in case you’re out in the sun with no protection. There are some areas that are covered but not many and the Sri Lankan sun can be punishing.
Bring food and water
Obviously bring water, and if you skipped breakfast like we did to get there early, then why not bring a picnic breakfast to enjoy at the top?
Conclusion: Lion Rock In Sigiriya
Lion Rock in Sigiriya is definitely not to be missed if you can shell out the money to visit. We were blown away by how immense it is and trust us, the stairs are worth the sweat (and tears!).
