3 Days In Kefalonia 2025: The Ultimate Itinerary
Wondering how best to spend 3 days in Kefalonia? We’ve got you covered.
Tucked away in Greece’s Ionian Sea, Kefalonia (Cephalonia) is a breathtaking island that promises memorable adventures through picturesque landscapes, historical villages, and alluring coastal vistas.
You only have to read a few quotes about this Greek island to get a feel for how magical it really is.
It’s one of the first Greek islands we ever visited, and it’s also one of our favourites. So much so that we’ve been back many times, and each visit is better than the last.
While it is easy enough to spend weeks lounging away in the Mediterranean sun, we found that Kefalonia also makes for a fantastic short break and is a perfect destination for those with limited vacation time.
What’s even better is that despite being one of the best Greek Islands to visit for couples and families, Kefalonia is actually far less visited than the islands found in Greece’s Aegean Sea, allowing for an exploration of Greece’s authentic island lifestyles.
This is the 3-day Kefalonia itinerary that we followed for our recent trip. It is a great place to start planning your adventure to the Ionian Island and features a stop at all of Kefalonia’s major attractions and highlights.

Arriving in Lixouri

The best place to stay for exploring Kefalonia is the small town of Lixouri, located along the eastern shores of the island’s Paliki peninsula. Situated just across the water from Kefalonia’s capital and the main port of Argostolia, Lixouri offers a quiet neighborhood from which to explore the island.
The easiest way to reach Kefalonia is through the island’s international airport just outside of Argostolia, which services flights from Athens and several European cities.
From there, you can either rent a car (check out Discover Cars for the best deals) or take the bus to Lixouri, which is located just under an hour away, but the quickest way is by ferry which runs every 30-minutes and takes just 20 minutes from port to port.
The cost of just a few Euros for adults and you can also take your car onboard plus 2 passengers for less than 10 Euros.
Alternatively, visitors traveling from the Greek mainland can also catch the ferry from Kyllini to Argostoli, driving the rest of the way to Lixouri from the port. We recommend renting a car when you arrive, as this gives you the most freedom to explore the breadth of the island according to your own schedule.
Regardless of how you get to the town, I’d recommend spending the rest of the first day of your arrival relaxing from the trip and preparing for the whirlwind of adventures the following days will bring.
Day 1: Visit Kefalonia’s Northern Villages
✔ Don’t forget your travel insurance! We use Safety Wing and highly recommend it. With insurance designed for frequent travelers and digital nomads, it ticks all the right boxes. ✔
The first of your three days in Kefalonia should be dedicated to exploring the island’s northern villages and landmarks. So prepare to wake up early because there is plenty to see and do.
While you are free to explore this area as you please, plan your day around these three activities to experience the absolute best of the region.
Enjoy a Relaxing Morning at Myrtos Beach

Known for having some of the bluest waters in Greece, Myrtos Beach is a must-visit destination along any Kefalonia itinerary and is only about a 40-minute drive north of Lixouri.
Surrounded by two towering limestone cliffs, the beach is one of the most picturesque coastal landscapes on the island. Visitors can take a leisurely stroll along the half-mile length of the beach, swim or simply unwind using one of the beach loungers for an hour or two before venturing on to their next stop.
However you choose to enjoy the beach, be sure to stop at the roadside viewpoints for some of the best views of the coast and perfect photo opportunities.
✔ If you choose not to hire a car then make sure you book onto a tour of the island. This highly rated tour will take you to some of the best spots, including Myrtos Beach.
Take a Stroll Through the Picturesque Streets of Asos Village

Easily one of the best beach towns in Greece, Asos is only a 20-minute drive north from the beach and is the next stop in your Kefalonia itinerary.
The picturesque village is perhaps the most charming on the island and maintains much of its traditional small-town charms, boasting only 100 inhabitants with no sign of commercialization in sight.
A stop at Asos is a fantastic way to explore the authentic Greek culture of the island, and visitors should plan to spend an hour or two exploring its colorful streets. The town is also home to several local taverns and restaurants, which make for a welcome break for a traditional lunch.
Explore Venetian Architecture in Fiskardo

Between 1500 AD and 1800 AD, Kefalonia was inhabited and administered by the Venetians. Unfortunately, many of the culture’s strongholds and villages were destroyed by an earthquake in 1953, with the exception of only a few key areas of the island.
The most significant of these areas is the northern village of Fiskardo, which largely escaped the catastrophic effects of the quake, allowing modern visitors to explore the historical cultures of the island’s Venetian past.
After touring the town’s colorful and historic buildings, visitors can head down to the harbourfront, where they can enjoy dinner at a selection of tavernas and restaurants. Following dinner, you can either stay for drinks or head down to the beach to enjoy the day’s final hours before heading back to Lixouri for the night.
Day 2: Day Trip Down to Sami and Argostolia
The second day of this 3-days itinerary is dedicated to exploring the villages, towns, and natural marvels of the island’s southern destinations.
Like the northern part of the island, there are tons of things to do and see in this region, and you will want to start your day early to get to them all.
Wake Up Early to Enjoy the Morning Sun in Sami
A more extensive village than those explored so far, Sami is the first stop along your second-day itinerary. It features beautiful beaches, Venetian architecture, and a spectacular waterfront with taverns and restaurants.
Additionally, Sami is located along the island’s eastern shores. So if you want to make the most of your day, you should plan to wake up early enough to be able to admire the breathtaking sunrise over the Ionian as you wait for the businesses to open for the day.
This is also a great spot for boat lovers and there are plenty of yachts, both large and small, to admire whilst you sip on your coffee and take in the views.
✔ Don’t miss out on Kefalonia’s stunning coastline. Book a boat trip to explore on the water too.
Adventure Through the Melissani and Drogarati Caves

The next stop along your second-day tour of Kefalonia is at the Melissani and Drogarati Caves, both of which are less than a five-minute drive from town. So, when you are done exploring the village’s colorful streets, be sure to stop by both of these natural marvels.
Melissani Cave is the first of the sites and is the one you should absolutely do if you have to choose between the two. The cave features tall cavern walls encompassing a beautiful azure lake with stalagmite and stalactite rock formations.
You can tour the lake via a boat tour which is provided in the price, but be sure to go around 11 am to midday for the best lighting.
The Drogarati Cave is located nearby and was only discovered following an earthquake in the 1700s. The cave features various geographical rock formations and is perfect for exploring the island’s geological processes.
PRO TIP: You should plan to visit this cave after Melissani, as the cavern offers a cooling respite from the afternoon heat.
✔ If you haven’t hired a car then book onto a trip to Melissani and the Drogarati Cave so you don’t miss out.
Take Some Time to Admire the Picturesque Shores of Antisamos Beach

Antisamos Beach is another must-visit site near Sami and is only about 10 minutes from town. Unlike many of the island’s other beaches, Antisamos beach is not a sandy shore but is rather covered in small white pebbles. So, be sure to bring comfortable shoes, and check out more Greek packing essentials.
Luckily, the beach is beautiful and features crystal clear waters surrounded by high forested hills. The water is fantastic for snorkeling, and the cove itself was made famous when it was featured in the film ‘Captain Corelli’s Mandolin’.
The beach also features a large bar and restaurant and is a good spot to grab lunch and some drinks. They also offer complimentary loungers and umbrellas for patrons.
Explore Argostolia and the Lighthouse of Saint Theodoroi

Once you’ve gotten your fill of the beach, the next stop for the second day of your Kefalonia tour brings you to the island’s capital, Argostoli. Located about 45 minutes from Sami, on the island’s western shores, Argostolia is the largest village on the island and offers plenty of things to see.
Along with touring the town and its picturesque harbor, be sure to make the journey over to the Lighthouse of Saint Theodoroi. Constructed in 1828, the lighthouse comprises 20 columns and offers some of the most surreal views of the peninsula and surrounding sea.
After spending the late afternoon touring the city, it is time to head back to Lixouri for the night to prepare for your final day on the island.
Day 3: Explore Around Lixouri
After spending the previous days touring all over the island, the final day of this 3-days Kefalonia itinerary is dedicated to relaxing amidst the simple island charms surrounding your base in Lixouri.
Start the Day with a Relaxing Morning at Petani Beach

To start your final day, you will want to wake up nice and early and head to Petani Beach. Located 20 minutes from town, the beach is breathtaking and my favorite beach in Kefalonia, with a mix of soft sand & pebbles and unbelievably blue waters.
It is surrounded by foreboding limestone cliffs, providing a classically dramatic Grecian beach experience.
While the beach offers a sense of seclusion, the beach does have a large selection of beach chairs, umbrellas, and two beachside bars offering tasty local cuisine. It is a great spot to start your day by listening to the relaxing crash of the waves over a morning mimosa or coffee.
Enjoy the Quaint Island Vibes in Lixouri
After taking in the morning sun, it is time to head back to town to immerse in the simple, authentic charms of the community. There are many things to do in Lixouri, and you can spend the entire afternoon taking in the town’s simple elegance.
You can enjoy lunch at the harbor, peruse the local shops, or even spend the day getting lost in the colorful streets. Whatever you choose to do, it is essential to slow things down to experience the sleepy island vibes that the Greek islands are famous for.
End the Day with a Breathtaking Sunset at Xi Beach

After spending the day aimlessly wandering the town, you will want to head over to Xi Beach to spend your final evening admiring the vibrant and diverse colors of one of Kefalonia’s most unique stretches of shoreline.
Boasting bright red sands surrounded by white clay cliffs, Xi Beach is full of colorful contrasts, which are only enhanced by the reflective lights of the evening’s setting sun.
Taking in the breathtaking light show is one of the best ways to end your Kefalonian holiday and brings a surreal ending to your 3-days Kefalonia itinerary.
Interestingly during our entire stay, the tide at Xi Beach was high-tide all day, every day. This phenomenon baffled the locals and everyone we ask couldn’t tell us why as this had never happened in all of the time they have lived there.
Following the sunset, it is time to head back to your accommodation in Lixouri to get plenty of rest before your flight home or ferry to your next Greek island!
