Is Santorini Worth It? What’s So Special About Santorini?

a church in santorini

Honestly, we thought Santorini would be massively over-rated and not worth a visit at all. We were wrong.

Adam and I always have to remind ourselves that places become popular for a reason. There is usually something pretty cool about a place for it to warrant the attention of so many, and Santorini is no exception.

Are there quieter, just as beautiful islands in Greece? Yes, absolutely. If you want to feel like you’re off the beaten track a little more then some of the quieter Greek islands might be a better fit for you.

But saying that, Santorini does have a unique charm and if you can spare a few days here then you won’t be disappointed! Let’s delve into more detail on why Santorini is so special, and also look at some of the reasons you might want to avoid it.

Reasons You Should Visit Santorini

a view of santorini showing the reasons it's worth a visit

There are multiple reasons to visit this stunning Greek island and it would take pages to go into them all, but here are the top reasons we loved Santorini so much and would go back for another visit if we could!

The Scenery

The scenery in Santorini is undoubtedly one of the island’s most captivating features. It is characterized by a combination of natural beauty and man-made structures that create a picturesque setting.

The island’s main settlements, such as Oia, Fira, and Imerovigli, are perched on the cliffs of the caldera. The white-washed buildings with their blue-domed roofs stand in striking contrast against the deep blue sea and the rugged volcanic cliffs.

The sight of these villages clinging to the edge of the caldera is truly remarkable. We’ll look a little more at why Santorini’s towns are so special below!

If you’re looking for natural beauty then the caldera views in Santorini are breathtaking. As you look out from the cliffs, you’ll be treated to expansive vistas of the sea and the neighboring islands. The caldera itself, formed by a volcanic eruption, creates a natural amphitheater-like setting that adds to the island’s charm.

If you have the time then you absolutely must take a trip there. This was the one we took – it was incredible.

✅ Book a trip to the caldera now

Santorini’s volcanic origins are also evident in its unique beaches. The volcanic ash and minerals give the beaches a distinct character.

Perissa, Kamari, Red Beach, and White Beach are among the notable beaches, each offering their own distinct beauty. The black sand and pebbles against the backdrop of the cliffs create a striking contrast. You’ll definitely want to visit at least one of the black sand beaches. Theyw ere a real highlight for us.

One thing Santorini is renowned for is its stunning sunsets, and watching the sun sink below the horizon is a popular activity for visitors. The combination of the golden hues, the silhouetted buildings, and the expansive sea creates a magical ambiance. In fact, one of our friends recently got proposed to as the sun was setting and the photos look so romantic!

The most famous spots to view sunsets are Oia and Fira, but other locations on the western side of the island also offer remarkable views.

Despite the island’s arid climate, Santorini has managed to cultivate vineyards and farmland. The vineyards, with their low-lying vines trained into unique basket shapes, are a distinctive feature of the landscape. Exploring the vineyards and farmland adds a different dimension to the island’s scenery, showcasing its agricultural heritage.

Santorini is dotted with traditional windmills, particularly in the village of Oia. These charming structures, with their white exteriors and pointed roofs, add a touch of nostalgia to the landscape. They have become iconic symbols of the island and provide unique photo opportunities. You’ll probably recognise them from various postcards and guidebooks.

The scenery in Santorini is enchanting and offers a mix of natural wonders, stunning architecture, and unique geological formations. It’s no wonder that many travelers are captivated by its beauty.

The Beautiful Towns

Santorini is home to several beautiful towns and villages. We didn’t have time to visit them all but Oia and Fira are the most popular and perhaps the most beautiful, though Pyrgos should definitely be squeezed into the itinerary too if you have the time.

Oia

Oia is perhaps the most famous and picturesque town in Santorini. Known for its stunning sunsets and breathtaking views of the caldera, Oia is characterized by its white-washed houses, narrow cobblestone streets, and blue-domed churches.

The town is perched on the cliffs, offering panoramic vistas of the Aegean Sea. It also boasts a vibrant arts scene, with many art galleries and boutique shops.

Oia is a popular place to stay, especially for people on their honeymoon or for those looking for luxury, top-class accommodation.

Fira

As the capital of Santorini, Fira is a bustling and vibrant town. It sits high on the Caldera cliffs, providing stunning views of the sea and the volcano. Fira offers a wide range of restaurants, cafes, bars, and shops, making it a lively place to explore.

The town features a mix of traditional Cycladic architecture and more modern buildings, and its narrow streets are lined with boutiques and souvenir shops.

This is the most convenient place to stay as it’s the town where ferries arrive and depart.

Imerovigli

Imerovigli is often referred to as the “balcony of Santorini” due to its elevated position and commanding views of the caldera. It is situated between Fira and Oia and offers a more tranquil and serene atmosphere.

Imerovigli is known for its luxurious hotels and resorts, making it a popular choice for honeymooners and couples seeking a romantic getaway.

Pyrgos

Located in the center of Santorini, Pyrgos is a traditional village with a rich history. It is characterized by its medieval architecture, narrow alleys, and the ruins of a Venetian castle at the highest point of the village.

Pyrgos offers panoramic views of the island and the sea. It is less crowded compared to Oia and Fira, making it a peaceful and authentic place to experience the local culture.

Megalochori

Megalochori is a charming traditional village known for its narrow streets, white-washed houses, and blue-domed churches.

It offers a glimpse into the island’s past with its well-preserved architecture and traditional atmosphere. Megalochori is also renowned for its local wineries, making it an excellent destination for wine lovers.

These towns and villages showcase the unique architecture, stunning vistas, and cultural heritage of Santorini. Each place has its own distinct character and allure, contributing to the island’s overall charm.

The Delicious Greek Food

delicious looking greek food on a holiday in santorini

Greek cuisine is known for its flavorful and wholesome dishes, incorporating fresh ingredients, herbs, and aromatic spices. Think food your mum would make, only Greek.

Santorini, being part of Greece, offers a delightful array of traditional Greek food. Here are some delicious Greek dishes you can (and should!) savor while visiting Santorini:

  • Moussaka: Moussaka is a classic Greek dish consisting of layered eggplant or potatoes, ground meat (usually beef or lamb), and a rich tomato sauce, topped with creamy béchamel sauce. It is then baked to perfection. Moussaka is a hearty and flavorful dish that is popular throughout Greece.
  • Souvlaki: Souvlaki is a quintessential Greek street food that consists of skewered and grilled pieces of marinated meat, such as pork, chicken, or lamb. It is often served with pita bread, tzatziki sauce (made with yogurt, cucumber, and garlic), and a side of salad or fries. Souvlaki is a delicious and convenient option for a quick meal. Get it as a Gyros (everything in a sandwich pitta) to go!
  • Greek Salad: A Greek salad, or horiatiki, is a refreshing and healthy dish that showcases the flavors of the Mediterranean. It typically includes fresh tomatoes, cucumbers, red onions, bell peppers, olives, and feta cheese, dressed with extra virgin olive oil and sprinkled with dried oregano. The simplicity and freshness of the ingredients make it a popular choice. We could live off this.
  • Spanakopita: Spanakopita is a savory pastry made with layers of phyllo dough filled with a mixture of spinach, feta cheese, onions, herbs, and eggs. It is baked until golden and crispy. Spanakopita is a flavorful and satisfying dish, often enjoyed as an appetizer or as part of a meze platter. This isn’t my favourite (I’ve eaten too many I think) but it’s usually a big hit.
  • Baklava: Baklava is a sweet pastry made with layers of flaky phyllo dough, nuts (usually walnuts or pistachios), and a sweet syrup made with honey, sugar, and lemon juice. It is a rich and indulgent dessert that offers a delightful combination of textures and flavors. It’s a little sweet for us but you should definitely give it a try.
  • Santorini Fava: Santorini is famous for its unique fava beans, which are grown on the island. Santorini fava is a creamy and delicious purée made from yellow split peas. It is often served as a dip or a side dish, drizzled with olive oil and sprinkled with herbs. Santorini fava is a must-try local specialty. Sounds plain but they are SO good!
  • Fresh Seafood: Being an island, Santorini offers an abundance of fresh seafood. Grilled octopus, fried calamari, and fish dishes like grilled or baked sea bass are popular choices. The seafood is often prepared simply, allowing the natural flavors to shine.

These are just a few examples of the delicious Greek food you can enjoy while visiting Santorini. Greek cuisine is known for its variety and flavors, so be sure to explore the local tavernas and restaurants to discover more culinary delights during your stay.

The Range Of Things To Do

Santorini offers a diverse range of activities and attractions to suit different interests and we were amazed by how much was on offer here. There really is something for everyone.

Here are a few of the activities that we would highly recommend (especially the catamaran cruise!)

Catamaran Cruises

Exploring the island’s coastline and caldera on a catamaran cruise is a fantastic way to experience Santorini’s beauty. These cruises often include stops at volcanic hot springs, secluded beaches, and snorkeling spots.

You can enjoy swimming in the crystal-clear waters, indulge in a barbecue meal on board, and witness breathtaking sunsets from the sea.

These tours sell out quickly but there a lot on offer. It’s hard to know which are any good, as some looked really over-crowded. We absolutely loved this catamaran tour and recommend it to everyone!

Helicopter Rides

This is something for all those honeymooners!

For a truly unique and awe-inspiring experience, you can take a helicopter ride over Santorini. This allows you to marvel at the island’s volcanic landscape, caldera, and stunning vistas from a bird’s-eye view.

It’s a thrilling way to appreciate the beauty of the island and capture stunning aerial photographs. It’s also one of those once in a lifetime experiences that you can’t really miss while in Santorini.

Wine Tasting

Santorini is renowned for its wine production, thanks to its volcanic soil and unique grape varieties. You can visit local wineries and take part in wine-tasting tours to sample the island’s distinctive wines, such as Assyrtiko and Vinsanto.

Many wineries offer guided tours of their vineyards and cellars, providing insights into the winemaking process.

This vineyard and wine-tasting tour is one of the best. The guide is really knowledgeable, and the small group makes it feel more intimate. We were suckers for the tapas too!

Black Beaches

Santorini is famous for its black volcanic beaches, which are a result of the island’s volcanic history. Perissa, Kamari, and Perivolos are some of the notable black sand beaches where you can relax, swim, and soak up the sun.

These beaches offer various amenities, including beach bars, restaurants, and water sports activities.

Akrotiri Archaeological Site

Explore the ancient ruins of Akrotiri, often referred to as the “Minoan Pompeii.” This archaeological site offers a glimpse into the Minoan civilization and the volcanic eruption that buried the town. You can see well-preserved buildings, frescoes, and artifacts that date back thousands of years.

Hike from Fira to Oia

For those who enjoy hiking and scenic walks, the trail from Fira to Oia offers a fantastic opportunity. This trail stretches along the Caldera cliffs and offers breathtaking views of the sea, the volcanic landscape, and the picturesque towns.

It’s a memorable way to explore the island on foot and discover hidden viewpoints along the way.

These are just a few examples of the many activities and experiences available in Santorini. Whether you’re seeking relaxation, adventure, or cultural exploration, the island offers something for everyone to enjoy.

The Nightlife

While Santorini is not primarily known for its vibrant nightlife like some other Greek islands, it still offers a range of options to enjoy in the evenings. We loved that there was lots to do other than just party.

Here are some ideas!

  • Take in the sunsets: Santorini’s stunning sunsets provide the perfect backdrop for enjoying a drink or a meal in a relaxed setting. Many bars and restaurants, especially in Oia and Fira, offer panoramic views of the caldera and the sea. Sipping a cocktail or enjoying a glass of wine while watching the sunset is a popular activity among visitors.
  • Lounge Bars and Cocktail Venues: There are several lounge bars and cocktail venues scattered across Santorini, where you can unwind and enjoy a variety of drinks in a laid-back atmosphere. Fira, Oia, and Kamari are known for their lively bar scenes, offering a range of options to suit different preferences.
  • Nightclubs and DJ Parties: While Santorini’s nightlife may not be as bustling as some other destinations, there are a few nightclubs where you can dance and party until the early hours. These clubs often host DJ parties and events, particularly during the peak tourist season. Fira is the main hub for late-night entertainment on the island and although we didn’t sample it ourselves, it sounded like a great night!
  • Live Music and Cultural Performances: Santorini occasionally hosts live music events, particularly in the summer months. You might find local bands or international artists performing in selected venues, offering a chance to enjoy live music under the stars. Additionally, some traditional tavernas feature live Greek music and dance performances, providing an opportunity to immerse yourself in the island’s culture.
  • Beach Bars and Beach Parties: Santorini’s beach towns, such as Kamari and Perissa, have vibrant beach bar scenes, especially during the summer months. These beach bars often organize beach parties with DJs, live music, and a lively atmosphere. Enjoying a cocktail, dancing on the sand, and soaking up the beach vibes can be a fun way to experience the island’s nightlife.

It’s important to note that Santorini is generally more renowned for its relaxed and romantic ambiance, particularly in the evenings.

The emphasis is often on enjoying the island’s beautiful views, dining in exquisite settings, and savoring the tranquility rather than high-energy nightlife.

However, there are still opportunities to find entertainment and enjoy a vibrant atmosphere during your evenings on the island.

Some luxury accommodations feature private villas with their own infinity pools, providing a truly lavish and intimate experience. Reasons To Give Santorini A Miss

While Santorini might be one of the best islands of Greece to some, it may not be everyone’s cup of tea. Here are a few reasons why someone might consider giving Santorini a miss.

It’s important to note that these reasons may not be applicable to everyone, and Santorini still remains a highly sought-after destination for its stunning views, romantic ambiance, and unique volcanic landscape.

However, for travelers seeking a different type of vacation experience or looking to explore less crowded and more affordable destinations, considering these factors may help in making an informed decision about whether to visit Santorini or explore other options.

The Crowds

Santorini attracts a significant number of tourists, especially during the peak summer months. This can result in crowded streets, long queues at popular attractions, and a bustling atmosphere that may not be appealing to those seeking a quieter or more secluded vacation experience.

If crowds aren’t your thing but you really want to experience Santorini then you should consider booking a visit over the shoulder season of Spring and Autumn, or even visiting in the winter. While some attractions might be closed, you’ll find it far quieter at these times.

You should also make sure you book popular attractions in advance to make sure you’re not disappointed. Things like boat trips sell out quickly here.

The Expense

a blue domed church in famous santorini in Greece

Santorini is known for its luxury accommodations, high-end restaurants, and upscale shopping. As a result, the cost of visiting Santorini can be higher compared to other destinations. If you’re Greek island hopping then you’ll find Santorini is one of the more expensive islands in Greece.

Accommodation, dining, and transportation expenses may be significantly more expensive than in other parts of Greece.

A Lack Of Culture

Santorini’s popularity has led to a significant influx of tourists, and some visitors feel that the island has lost some of its traditional Greek charm and authenticity.

The main towns of Fira and Oia, in particular, have become more commercialized and cater to tourists, which may detract from experiencing a more traditional Greek atmosphere.

We would recommend you combine your trip to Santorini with at least one quieter Greek island like Astypalea, so that you can experience Santorini’s beauty and also get a taste of local Greek culture.

Places To Avoid In Santorini

While Santorini is generally a safe and enjoyable destination, there are a few areas or situations you may want to be cautious of or avoid to ensure a smooth and pleasant experience. Here are a few things to consider:

  1. Overcrowded Areas: During the peak tourist season, popular areas such as Oia, Fira, and the major beaches can become very crowded, especially during the day when cruise ship visitors are present. While these areas offer stunning views and attractions, the large crowds may diminish the experience. Consider visiting these places during less busy times, such as early mornings or late afternoons, to avoid the peak tourist influx.
  2. Pickpocketing and Valuables: As with any tourist destination, it’s important to be mindful of your belongings and exercise caution in crowded areas. Keep an eye on your belongings, avoid displaying expensive jewelry or carrying large amounts of cash, and be wary of your surroundings. Use secure bags and pockets to prevent pickpocketing incidents.
  3. Unauthorized Guided Tours: Be cautious of unauthorized or unlicensed tour operators offering guided tours. Stick to reputable tour agencies and licensed guides to ensure your safety and the quality of the experience. Booking in advance with tour companies like Viator is a great way to avoid anything dodgy.
  4. Dangerous Cliff Edges: Santorini’s landscape is characterized by cliffs and steep drop-offs, particularly in the caldera areas. While the views from these edges are stunning, exercise caution and stay away from unprotected or unstable cliff edges to avoid accidents or falls.
  5. Street Vendors and Touts: Like many tourist destinations, you may encounter street vendors and touts in Santorini, particularly in crowded areas. While some may offer legitimate goods or services, others may be more persistent or engage in scams. Be cautious when approached by unsolicited vendors and be firm in declining their offers if you’re not interested.

Overall, Santorini is a safe destination, but it’s always wise to exercise common sense, be aware of your surroundings, and take necessary precautions to ensure a pleasant and hassle-free visit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Here are some of your most frequently asked questions answered!

Is It Worth Going To Santorini For A Day?

santorini views at night time

While Santorini is undoubtedly a beautiful destination, visiting the island for just a day may not provide enough time to fully experience and appreciate all that it has to offer. Here are some factors to consider when deciding whether it’s worth going to Santorini for a day:

  • Travel Logistics: Santorini is not easily accessible for a day trip, especially if you’re coming from mainland Greece. Depending on your location, you may need to take a flight or a ferry, which can consume a significant portion of your day. It’s important to consider the travel time and logistics involved in reaching and departing from the island.
  • Limited Time to Explore: Santorini has a variety of attractions, including picturesque towns, stunning viewpoints, beautiful beaches, and historical sites. However, visiting for just a day means you’ll have limited time to explore and fully immerse yourself in the island’s beauty. You may have to prioritize specific areas or attractions, which could result in missing out on other notable experiences.
  • Avoiding Crowds: Santorini attracts a large number of tourists, particularly during the peak summer months. The island can get crowded, especially around popular areas such as Oia and Fira. If you visit for just a day, you’re more likely to encounter larger crowds, which can affect your overall experience and make it challenging to fully enjoy the beauty of the island.
  • Missing the Sunset: Santorini is renowned for its breathtaking sunsets, which are considered a highlight of the island. If you’re visiting for just a day, it may be difficult to catch the sunset, as it typically occurs in the evening. Missing out on this magical experience can diminish the overall allure and charm of Santorini.

While visiting Santorini for a day can still provide a glimpse of its beauty, it may not allow for a comprehensive exploration of the island’s attractions and experiences.

If you have the flexibility, we recommend 4 days in Santorini to fully appreciate Santorini’s unique landscape, relax on the beaches, wander through its towns, and savor the local cuisine.

This will provide a more fulfilling and memorable experience of this enchanting Greek island.

Do You Need To Hire A Car In Santorini?

Whether or not you need to hire a car in Santorini depends on several factors.

Santorini has a reliable public transportation system, including buses that connect major towns and tourist areas. If you plan to stay within the main towns like Fira, Oia, and Kamari, and don’t mind relying on public transport or walking, you may not need to rent a car.

However, if you want to explore remote areas of Santorini (which we really do recommend) that are not easily accessible by public transportation, renting a car can provide more convenience and flexibility.

Having a car allows you to visit less touristy villages, off-the-beaten-path beaches, and archaeological sites like Akrotiri at your own pace.

Consider your budget, as renting a car adds to your travel expenses, including the rental fee, fuel, and parking fees. If you have a limited budget or prefer a more relaxed and hassle-free experience, public transportation and taxis can be viable alternatives.

We used Discover Cars to get the best deal available on the island.

Lastly, take into account your driving experience and comfort level. Santorini’s roads can be narrow, winding, and steep, particularly in the cliffside towns.

If you are not accustomed to driving in such conditions or lack experience in similar terrains, it’s important to factor in your confidence level when deciding whether to rent a car.

For us it was well worth it for a few days as we had limited time and got to see a lot more of the island this way.

Is Santorini Or Mykonos Better?

The choice between Santorini and Mykonos depends on your personal preferences, travel style, and what you are looking for in a destination.

Both Santorini and Mykonos offer unique experiences, and each has its own appeal. Here are some factors to consider when comparing the two:

  1. Atmosphere and Vibe: Santorini has a more tranquil and romantic atmosphere, with its stunning caldera views, charming villages, and breathtaking sunsets. It is known for its relaxed ambiance and is often preferred by couples and travelers seeking a more intimate experience. Mykonos, on the other hand, has a livelier and cosmopolitan vibe. It is famous for its vibrant nightlife, beach clubs, and energetic atmosphere, making it popular among party-goers and those looking for a more energetic and social experience.
  2. Landscape and Beaches: Santorini is renowned for its unique volcanic landscape, with dramatic cliffs, white-washed buildings, and panoramic views of the Aegean Sea. The island doesn’t have extensive sandy beaches, but it offers volcanic pebble beaches and breathtaking caldera views. Mykonos, on the other hand, boasts beautiful sandy beaches with crystal-clear waters. It is known for its beach scene, water sports, and beach parties, making it a great choice for beach lovers.
  3. Sightseeing and Cultural Heritage: Santorini is rich in cultural and historical heritage, with attractions such as the archaeological site of Akrotiri, ancient ruins, and museums. It offers opportunities for exploring the island’s fascinating past and learning about its ancient civilizations. Mykonos, while not as renowned for its historical sites, has its own charm with its picturesque whitewashed buildings, narrow streets, and iconic windmills. The draw to Mykonos for us was nearby Delos, which really is worth the hype!
