Whether you’re a history buff, an art lover, or simply looking to escape the crowds, Florence in February has something for everyone.

So sit back, relax, and let’s explore all that this charming city has to offer during the winter season.

Is Florence Good To Visit In February

a view over the rooftops of Florence in February

February can be a great time to visit Florence and we loved our time there. The best time to visit Italy certainly isn’t always in the summer. Although there are a few negatives (which we’ll look at below), there are way more advantages to visiting over the winter months in our opinion.

One advantage of visiting Florence in February is that it’s considered to be the off-season, which means there are fewer tourists and shorter lines at popular attractions. During the summer months, Florence can be really crowded, so it was a relief to find lots of our favourite attractions were crowd free over the winter.

It’s also likely that you’ll find really good deals on flights and accommodation. You can afford to book somewhere a little nicer than you’d usually go for as a treat, or simply save the money for more pizza and hot chocolates!

We found the weather in February to be pleasant most of the time, with some lovely sunny days that reminded us of an English Spring. This made walking around the sights so much more bearable compared with the summer heat.

Of course, you’ll probably get some rain and overcast days too, but bring a decent raincoat and you’ll find the varied days quite fun!

Some popular events and holidays in Florence during February include the Carnevale di Firenze (Florence Carnival), which typically takes place in the weeks leading up to Ash Wednesday, and Valentine’s Day on February 14th. It can be more expensive to travel in Florence during this time, so watch out for that.

Overall, if you’re looking for a quieter time to explore Florence and don’t mind cooler temperatures, February can be a great time to visit.

Hot chocolate has never tasted better than in Italy! I don’t know what they do here, but it’s magic.

Treat yourself to a delicious Italian hot chocolate at one of Florence’s many cafés. The thick, creamy hot chocolate is the perfect way to warm up on a chilly day.

The Florence cafe scene is also super enticing in the winter months. You could spend a morning just sitting with a book in a cosy corner watching the world go by and drinking warming cocoa.

Downsides To Visiting In February

While there are many advantages to visiting Florence in February, there are also some potential downsides to keep in mind:

February can be a rainy and chilly month in Florence, with average temperatures ranging from 5-15°C (41-59°F). This weather may not be suitable for outdoor activities and can be uncomfortable if you’re not properly dressed.

Some attractions, shops, and restaurants may have reduced hours or be closed entirely during the winter months, especially in February. Be sure to check opening hours in advance, so you don’t miss out on anything you want to see or do.

The cold weather and rain may limit some outdoor activities and excursions, such as hiking and outdoor tours. However, there are still plenty of indoor activities to enjoy.

While February is generally considered the off-season, it’s important to note that there may still be crowds during school breaks, especially during the Carnival period. This can make some popular attractions busier than expected.

Overall, while there are some potential downsides to visiting Florence in February, with proper planning and expectations, you can still have a great time in this beautiful city. Afterall, there’s no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing!
