We’ve spent three years exploring Greece’s best islands by sailboat, and so far we haven’t found a single one without something special to offer. We are constantly in awe of the changing scenery, the friendly atmosphere, and the delicious food, and we can’t wait to share our top picks with you here.

To be honest, every Greek island is a couples paradise. The sunshine, clear waters and cute tavernas you’ll find everywhere in Greece set a relaxed romantic atmosphere, and because there are so many different islands you can keep returning year after year and never get bored.
We’ve narrowed down what we consider the best islands of Greece for spending time with your partner, whether it’s dinners out, relaxing by the ocean, or spending long lie-ins in luxurious accommodations.

#1 Paros
Beautiful Paros, in the middle of the Aegean sea, has to be one of the most romantic Greek islands. Part of its allure for couples is the fact there are so many different sides to Paros.
You can indulge in cocktails on the harbour front while gazing out at the super yachts in Naoussa, or head inland to the sleepy village of Lefkes with its stunning views and traditional way of life.
You can trek one of the many island trails together, or sunbathe on beautiful beaches getting up only for a cool-down dip in clear waters.
Paros is one of the best Greek islands for couples, no matter what you enjoy doing together. And if you tire of the scene here then you can always take a romantic day trip on a catamaran, or explore the neighbouring island of Naxos which is just a 30-minute taxi ride away.
How to get there
Flight
You can fly directly to Paros from Athens airport. This is the easiest way to get here, as you won’t have to leave Athens airport when you arrive and make your way to the ferry terminal.

Ferry
You can get the ferry to Paros from Athens for around 30 euros, and it will take just over 3 hours. If you want to see Greece from a different perspective then we would recommend a ferry trip. It’s a relaxed way to travel and you’ll pass lots of pretty islands along the way.
Use Direct Ferries to book (the slower ferries are often cheaper!)
Where to stay
The Livadia neighborhood can be found between Naoussa village and Kolymbithres Beach. It’s a luxury resort, built on the site of a Mycenaean acropolis, and it’s full of luxury hotels and villas. Ideal for romantic getaways.
Self-catering
Maria Seaview Villa: This villa is perfect for those who want to totally get away from it all. The interior is pretty special and you’ll have all the peace and quiet you could hope for. You might want to hire a car though as it’s a little out of the way. Check current prices here.

#2 Kephalonia
Kephalonia is the Greek island Adam and I had our first holiday together on, and it will forever be one of our favourites.
It’s the perfect Greek island for couples because it has a huge choice of pretty much private beaches and coves just waiting for couples in love to picnic alone, relax in the sun, or even skinny-dip in the crystal clear waters!
There are so many beautiful spots in Kephalonia that it’s hard to choose where to base yourself, and you might want to hire a car for your stay so you can visit all the iconic spots (and some of the off-the-beaten-track ones too!) If you want a completely stress-free holiday then take advantage of the many tours to the most beautiful sights.
A few of the top spots here include Assos with its stunning views, Myrtle beach for sunbathing bliss, and Fiskardo, a trendy town to dine out in.
You should also consider visiting Lake Melissani and AntiSamos beach. These spots were a real highlight for us, and we vowed to come back on our own yacht one day (which we did just two years later!)
You can even enjoy a long weekend here if you don’t have time for a week long holiday. Just three days in Kephalonia is enough to soak in the Greek island charm.
How to get there
The easiest way to reach Kephalonia is to fly here directly. Kephalonia has an international airport and there are flights here from all over. Once you arrive there are frequent buses and many taxis to take you all over the island.
If you can’t get a direct flight here then fly via Athens and enjoy a few days in the country’s capital as well.
Where to stay
Aenos Hotel – This hotel is in a great location in the town of Argostoli. Argostoli is a great place to base yourself as it’s close to the airport and harbour (plus there’s a load of adorable turtles that often make an appearance there).

Mariangela Apartments – For a little more peace and quiet head to the little harbour of Lixouri (about 10 minutes ferry ride from Argostoli). Lixouri is full of real Greek charm and is within easy walking of some great beaches. For availability and prices head here.
#3 Symi
Symi is a picture-perfect Greek town, and definitely one of the best islands of Greece! Once you see the views you won’t want to leave!

How to get there
There are no flights to Symi, so the best way to get here is by taking a flight to Rhodes, either internationally or from Athens, and then hopping on a ferry.
We think it’s best to combine the two, with a day or two in Rhodes old town taking in the history before you hop over to stunning Symi, where the sea is inviting and the town will take your breath away.
The ferry is easy to catch from the main ferry terminal (walking distance from the old town and clearly signposted). It takes around an hour and will take you directly to the centre of Symi. You’ll need to book your tickets in advance here.
Where to stay
Pitini apartment – You can’t beat sipping coffee on a balcony with views like this! As well as being a beautiful place to stay, it’s also in a great location and close to all the tavernas and bars. You can book here now but be aware this place sells out quickly during peak season.
Danezis – We’ve included this as the perfect option for anyone who doesn’t fancy the many stairs in Symi. It can be a bit of a trek to some of the accommodation with views, so if you’d rather save your workouts for the gym then this villa on the harbour front will be perfect.

#4 Corfu
Corfu has always been a favourite Greek island for families and rightfully so! There is something for every family here, whether you’re keen to bring history to life, spend your days on Corfu’s beautiful Paleokastritsa beach, or take a day trip to the stunning Paxos island with its resident Monk seals.

Flight
Corfu has an international airport that you can fly straight into from all over Europe. This is by far the quickest and easiest way to reach the island of Corfu.
You can also reach Corfu via Athens airport, and if you take this route it might be worth stopping for a little sightseeing trip in Athens at one end of your trip.
Ferry

Naxos is one of Greece’s biggest islands, and you’ll find it is a little more laid back than some of the islands nearby that attract a party crowd. This makes it the perfect destination for a family holiday!
Alongside many wholesome activities (visit the ancient ruins of Delos for a history lesson that will really hold the kid’s interest) there’s also a huge array of fabulous beaches.
A lot of the beaches on Naxos are shallow and supervised. St George Beach and Plaka are two favourites with families, or you can find horse riding trips on the beaches near the Chora.
How to get there
Flight
You can fly to Naxos from Athens airport, or you can fly to islands with bigger airports like Santorini and catch a quick ferry from there. Do a little shopping around before you decide as you can often find cheap flights to certain destinations.
Ferry
Naxos is a large island with lots of connecting ferry routes. The most convenient islands to catch a ferry from are Santorini or Mykonos.

#7 Delos
Greece is brimming with history and you’ll find it in every corner of every island, but the top of the list for the best islands of Greece for history surely has to be Delos – a whole island of ancient Greek architecture!
We were more than a little wowed by Delos. It would be impossible to see everything this historical island has to offer in just a day (especially during the heat of the summer!) but you will be able to get an idea of scale and wonder with a single visit.
There are a few highlights among the ancient ruins that you should try not to miss. Head to the Temple of Isis early to try and beat the crowds, and make sure you don’t miss the terrace of lions either. It’s worth taking a guided tour to learn about the real history of the place, as the placards don’t cut it here!
How to get there
Delos is a whole island of a museum, so there’s nowhere to stay on the actual island. Unless you have a sailboat that you anchor just off the island, the closest you can get is Mykonos.
If the Mykonos crowds scare you a little then you can also reach Delos on a day trip from the nearby Greek islands of Naxos or Paros. We preferred Paros for its atmosphere, but they are both beautiful islands!

You can also reach Samos via ferry, but it will take you a lot longer(around 12 hours). You might want to book an overnight ferry ride if this is your preferred form of transport so that you can make the most of your time on land.
You can book comfortable berths on the ferry, but you should be aware that summer is Meltemi season through the Aegean so the seas may be a little rough!

Ferry
A ferry journey from Athens to Crete is around 8 hours, and they run frequently. Keep in mind that Piraeus ferry terminal is a little outside Athens, so you’ll have to make your own way there before catching the ferry. With cheap flights from Athens daily, it probably makes more sense to fly.
Where to stay

#10 Kastos
We had to include Kastos on the list of the best islands of Greece for beaches, even though it is pretty off the beaten track. The stunning coves that decorate Kastos’ coastline mean it boasts countless small beaches that will take your breath away.
The water surrounding Kastos is like something from the Caribbean, and the many walking trails on the island mean you can enjoy the beaches from above too. The views are spectacular.
After a different beach for every day of the week, you can head back to the quaint little village to enjoy cocktails served in an old windmill, or balcony pizza overlooking the harbour.
It’s a special little place with a huge amount to offer anyone willing to put in the effort to get here!
How to get there
Kastos can only be reached by a twice-daily ferry from the mainland or by private or taxi boat. One of the reasons it’s so unspoiled is because it’s hard to get to!
These are two of the easiest ways to reach Kastos.
- Fly to Preveza airport on the mainland, hire a car, and head to Mytikas, where you can catch a ferry over to Kastos.
- Fly to Preveza and make your way to Lefkada where you should be able to find a taxi boat to Kastos (bear in mind these will only be running during the high season!)
#11 Zakynthos (aka Zante)
Zakynthos is one of the islands of Greece best known for its beaches, and rightfully so. Zakynthos boasts some truly beautiful beaches, each with its own unique vibe.
The most popular beach is Zakynthos Beach, which is located on the east coast of the island. Zakynthos Beach is a great place to relax, swim, and sunbathe, though it can get a little busy. There are also plenty of restaurants and cafes nearby, making it easy to grab a bite to eat.
One beach you’ll probably be familiar with is Navagio, otherwise known as Shipwreck Beach, which can only be reached by boat. The beach is surrounded by cliffs, and there’s a shipwreck in the bay, making it a stunning spot and one of the most photographed beaches in the world.
Egremni Beach is also well worth visiting but is only accessible by foot and Gerakas Beach gives you the opportunity to swim with loggerhead turtles.

Flight

To catch the ferry over to Zakynthos, head to the port of Kyllini in the Peloponnese. There are daily ferries over to Zakynthos, and the ride will take around an hour.

If you get tired of relaxing on stunning beaches (who are we kidding!) the traditional windmills of Ios are well worth exploring. The majority of the windmills are found in the beautiful Cycladic town of Chora where twelve windmills sit on the mountain slope decorating the horizon.
Whether you’re looking for a quiet spot to relax or an adventurous beach to explore, Ios has something to offer everyone.
How to get there
The only way to reach Ios is by ferry. The quickest route would be to fly into Santorini and take the ferry from there. It will take just over half an hour to reach Ios, and there are regular daily ferries to Ios.
You could combine your trip to Ios with a spot of sightseeing in the famous Santorini and see a little more of what Greece has to offer!

The Best Islands Of Greece To Visit For Hiking
#13 Sifnos
Sifnos is one of the best islands of Greece for hiking due to the 100km of professionally designed and marked trails. In fact, it boasts one of the largest trail networks of the Aegean!
You can choose between different levels of difficulties, ranging from trails less than 5km to a 15kn tour of the island. There are also kid-friendly treks you can take, ones that include swim stops and coastal walks with incredible views.
The island is home to a number of Byzantine churches and monasteries, as well as the ruins of an ancient Greek city. Sifnos is also known for its traditional pottery and terracotta roof tiles. Visitors can take a boat tour around the island, or relax on one of the many beaches.
It’s the perfect Greek island to get lost on (or hopefully not with all those well-marked trails!)
How to get there
The only way to reach the island of Sifnos is via ferry. You can catch the ferry from Piraeus just outside Athens, and it will take around 4 hours. There are regular daily ferries from Athens to Sifnos.

Tilos is one of the best islands of Greece for hiking. The island has dozens of marked trails that wind through its forests, along its coastlines, and up to its mountaintops. If you like to keep fit on your travels then Tilos is one long stair master!

There is no airport on the island of Tilos so you will need to catch the ferry here. You can catch the ferry from Athens, but it’s a very long journey (17 hours), so the best route would be to catch a flight to Kos or Rhodes and take the ferry to Tilos from either of those islands.

#16 Santorini
Santorini is renowned for its dramatic landscapes and romantic atmosphere, and it’s easy to see why it’s one of the most popular honeymoon destinations in the world.
It’s home to a number of popular tourist attractions, including the town of Oia, which is known for its picturesque whitewashed buildings and stunning views.
You’re going to want at least 4 days in Santorini to really do it justice. If you don’t have a car then book this tour which will take you around some of Santorini’s most beautiful towns, and will finish in Oia for that incredible famous sunset.
Make time for a little culture and visit the ruins of ancient Thera, visit the archaeological site of Akrotiri, or take a boat trip to see the volcanic crater at Nea Kameni.
Once you’ve had some time to explore inland you should take some time to explore what Greece really does best – the coastline. There are frequent ferries from the mainland (Athens) to Santorini, and depending on which ferry company you travel with it can take anywhere from 4 to 10 hours.

#17 Kimolos
Oh Kimolos, what a hidden gem you are! We fell totally in love with Kimolos and think it would be a dreamy honeymoon destination for anyone who wants to get away from it all with the one they love. This is a quiet Greek island with a lot of romance!
Kimolos is just next to the larger and more popular island of Milos but feels worlds away from all that hustle and bustle. Here you’re transported back to real Greek island life.
The actual town is beautiful, with its white-painted houses and cobblestone floors. There are some super cute places to dine out, most of them candlelit and romantic.
Kimolos has lovely, quiet beaches, and some more interesting coastline spots to enjoy. There are also some great hikes around the island (if you can drag yourself out of your room in time!)
If you’re short on time, you can visit Kimolos on a day trip from the larger island of Milos.
How to get there
There’s no airport on Kimolos which only adds to its charm. The only way to reach it is by sea.
It’s possible to get a ferry to Kimolos straight from Athens but we wouldn’t advise it. It’s a slow journey with several stops.
Unless you want to do a bit of island hopping the best way to get to Kimolos is to hop on a ferry or flight to Milos. If you have time, Milos is a lovely place to spend a few days. Then make your way to Pollonia where there’s a quick ferry over to Kimolos.

Rhodes is one of the best islands in Greece for watersports lovers. With crystal clear waters and a huge variety of activities on offer, it’s the perfect place to enjoy a range of different sports.
Whether you’re a fan of sailing, windsurfing, kitesurfing, or simply swimming, Rhodes has something for everyone.
It’s got some windy hotspots, so you’ll find some good opportunities for wind-driven watersports, especially to the South West of the islands. Rhodes has many Kite Surfing schools which offer lessons for all levels.
It’s also a great place to go snorkelling and diving as there are many beautiful reefs and shipwrecks to explore. Or you can try out sea kayaking around Rhodes’s interesting coastline. Head to Lindos where there are lots of opportunities to experience beginner watersports.

The cliffs around the island are also home to a colony of around 60 endangered Mediterranean monk seals. Cuvier’s beaked whales and sperm whales have also been sighted here.
Head to the main town of Patitiri to book your diving trip. If you have the advanced open water certification you can dive the fifth century BC wreck, home to thousands of historic amphorae.

There is no airport on Alonissos so you will have to travel by ferry. There are frequent ferries from mainland Greece and the ports of Volos and Evia, and you can also catch a ferry to and from the nearby islands of Skopelos and Skiathos.

#25 Astypalea
Astipalea is definitely in our top three islands of Greece. If you’re heading to the Dodecanese then make Astipalea your first choice! It’s amazing that it’s one of the cheapest Greek islands, as it’s also one of the most beautiful.
The reason you’re more likely to find good deals on the island of Astypalea is that it’s pretty quiet compared to a lot of Greek islands in this area. With neighbouring islands of Santorini, Ios and Rhodes it tends to get a little overlooked.
if you’re on a budget then Astypalea is perfect, as there are so many free things to do here. The town itself is beautiful, with a dazzling Chora and some traditional windmills to photograph. The castle at the top is also well worth a visit and you’ll find amazing views from up there.
Astipalea has some amazing trekking opportunities and stunning little beaches and coves. Try sticking to beaches on the south of the island if you visit during a Meltemi (when the north winds blow!)
If you find you’re missing the tourist scene then head off on a boat trip to one of the neighbouring tiny islands, where the sea scenery is out of this world!

For a relatively quiet island, Astypalea is blessed with an airport! This makes it a super convenient option for anyone looking for an island a little less popular but just as easy to get to.
It’s not a major airport, so flights are a little more limited, and only run from Athens. You can search for the best way to get there from your destination here.
Ferry
There is a regular ferry connection between Astypalea and Piraeus port in Athens, so the ferry is probably the easiest and cheapest way to reach Astypalea. It’s quite a long trip, around 9 hours with stops at other islands along the way.
The ferry from Piraeus to Astypalea runs roughly three times a week, but you can also reach Astypalea from Naxos, Amorgos, Paros, Donoussa, Rhodes, and Tilos. It fits in perfectly with any Greek island hopping trip in the Cyclades!

Lipsi is a pretty tiny cheap Greek island compared to some, and it doesn’t have an airport. The nearest airport is Leros and you can catch a ferry from there. The ferry port is on the opposite side of the island to the airport, but will only take around half an hour to reach by taxi.
You can also reach Lipsi by ferry from Rhodes, Kos, Kalymnos, and more, so it works as a stop-off on a tour of some of the best islands of Greece.

The Best Greek Islands To Visit In Summer (June, July, and August)
Summer is Greece’s busiest season. Popular, well-known islands are likely to be crowded and more expensive than during the shoulder seasons. If you’re looking for a lively atmosphere then summer is definitely the best time to visit Greece!
It’s also the hottest time of year in the whole of Greece. In the Cyclades and Dodecanese, you’re likely to experience the Meltemi winds. These blow from north to south for most of the summer and can be pretty fierce. Head to southern beaches if you experience them, so you don’t end up with a sand picnic!
They’re cooling which is welcoming but can be a little full-on. Bring some shorts to wear under light dresses if you want to avoid a lot of Marilyn Monroe moments!
The Best Greek Islands To Visit In Autumn and Spring (September, October March, April, May)
The shoulder season in Greece is one of our favourite times of the year. Although storms can be frequent, you’ll also find an abundance of flowers and orange and lemon trees.
The weather is a little cooler, and popular Greek islands will be quiet so it’s the perfect time to enjoy places like Santorini, Rhodes, Mykonos, and Corfu.
You’ll find the warmest weather over in the Dodecanese. We were still swimming in October and early November in Samos. The water is still nippy during the Spring though, so don’t plan on swimming then without a wetsuit!
Best Greek Islands To Visit in Winter (November, December, January, February)
Greece can be very quiet in the winter months. Many local businesses aimed at tourists shut down, and it can be hard to find accommodation and places to eat on some of the smaller Greek islands. A lot of attractions shut down too.
Crete, Santorini, and Rhodes are the best islands to visit in winter. They have more going on over the winter months, and because they’re bigger islands they tend to have more local life too.
Being quite far south they tend to stay hotter for longer, so you’re more like to have pleasant weather (though Santorini saw snow in 2022 for the first time in years!)

There are a few ways to get to Greece, depending on your location and budget. You can fly into one of the major airports like Athens or Thessaloniki, or you can take a ferry from Italy or Turkey. If you’re coming from further away, you might have to take a connecting flight to get to Greece.
