The term “hiking boots” sometimes summons up images of heavy, overbuilt clodhoppers. The Cascades are basically the polar opposite of that – they’re an extremely lightweight and sporty hiking boot that feels more like a very structured pair of running shoes.
At 1050g (2.3lbs) per pair for the men’s edition, or 700g (1.5lbs) for the women’s, these are much lighter than an average hiking boot, which contributes to their sporty feeling and obviously translates to endurance on longer hikes.
They’re fully waterproof and breathable, and very flexible and comfortable right out of the box. At the same time, they’re extremely supportive, and the deep, aggressive tread inspires a lot of confidence.
These are a really versatile and competent set of boots that will work great for both casual hikers and true outdoor enthusiasts.

Is Comfort Important?
It can be hard to find the right balance between structure and comfort in a shoe. Too stiff and you feel restricted; too soft and you risk rolling an ankle or stubbing a toe. One thing we really liked about the Cascades is that they get that balance just right.
There’s something about the design of these boots that allows for very natural foot movement and flexibility. Their lightweight nature certainly contributes, but they also use a few different technologies from Helly Hansen’s repertoire to help dial in that day-long comfort.
The first is called Arch Brace and it’s an internal support structure a bit like an orthotic. It provides better arch support than a flat shoe, and in turn, reduced fatigue during prolonged wear.
The stock insoles in these boots use Helly Hansen’s Max-Comfort and Power Stride technologies, which are essentially just big, anatomically-shaped shock-absorbing pads. They go a long way to softening pressure points, spreading the load and reducing impact on your joints.
The Cascades also come with Pro Guard toe and heel guards, which shield your feet from impacts and other hazards on the trail. These sections are highly structured and protective – when I first tried them on, I honestly thought they had steel toes for a moment!
They fit true to size and width, with a generous toe box that provides a bit more room to wiggle your toes and keep blood circulating without ever feeling loose or sloppy.
These boots can be bought in either in a low-cut or mid-height option. We tested, and would recommend, the mid – the padded collar and mid-cut height provide excellent ankle support without being bulky or restrictive. Ankle support is an important safety feature if you’re planning on hiking uneven terrain, especially if it’s far from civilisation.
The Waterproofing & Breathability Of The Helly Hansen Cascade Hiking Boots
Much like the interplay between structure and comfort, breathability and waterproofing can sometimes be hard to reconcile. A plastic bag is almost totally waterproof, but if you wear them on your feet you’re going to be a sweaty mess in no time.
Breathability is critical in quality outdoor gear because without it heat and perspiration build up rapidly, soaking your underclothes and skin. Air exchange regulates moisture and temperature, keeping your feet dry and comfortable and preventing blisters. Breathability also helps your boots to dry faster if they do get wet.
Thankfully we now have modern waterproof membranes like HellyTech. These are made from a PU membrane covered in pores that are too small for water to enter, but large enough for air exchange to take place. When bonded on top of fabric the result is a flexible, fully waterproof layer that is also highly breathable.
The Cascades make extensive use of HellyTech on the upper, but they also have a rubber boot around the sole and waterproof sealing applied along all seam areas to prevent droplets leaking through the stitching.
This combination kept them totally dry in puddles and stream crossings in our testing, which we found doubly-impressive given that the shoe is made mostly from recycled materials.
Build Quality & Durability
We’ve walked a few hundred miles on these boots now, and they’re holding up great. They look a lot newer than they should.
The treads are deep and aggressive and seem like they’ll take a long time to wear out. Another nice feature about these boots is that the grip extends up the side of the sole a little. It helps a lot with traction and has probably prevented at least one fall already.
These boots have a lot of nice details like that, from the taped seams to the quality of the insoles. The high collars have little ergonomic plates sewn in for structure; even the laces seem to be bomb-proof.
It’s nice, and frankly reassuring, to see so much attention to detail and quality in a boot that some users are going to want to take to some fairly extreme places.

Overall, there’s a lot to like with these boots. The modern sporty aesthetic might not appeal to some traditionalists, but that’s about the only negative thing we can think to say about them.
They feel very solid and competent underfoot, the extra protection offered by the rigid toe and heel is genuinely very useful in rough terrain. The supportive ankle collar is also reassuring. The grip feels locked in on a wide range of surfaces, and the lightweight build contributes to them feeling very agile and free.
The waterproofing also performed extremely well even when we subjected it to unreasonably long dunks in a stream. The break-in period was essentially nothing.
Honestly, we were impressed.
Unless you need something really specialist, like a dedicated insulated mountaineering shoe, you’re probably going to be really happy with these.
