There isn’t really any doubt that Gill is a good sailing brand. It has been providing sailors with high-quality clothing and accessories for years and is one of the biggest names in sailing gear. The question is, is the best out there?

Their jackets and trousers are designed with both insulating fabrics and breathable technologies to keep you comfortable during extended days on the water – even in extreme conditions. We’ll dive into this in more detail below.

How Does Gill Sailing Gear Compare To Other Big Sailing Brands?

Having owned sailing gear from a range of different brands, we were impressed with the quality of Gill’s sailing gear.

We compared the quality of their OS2 range to our previous Helly Hansen and Henri Lloyd gear, and here is what we found.

Materials

Firstly, we loved that 98% of the OS2 Offshore jacket from Gill is made from reclaimed plastic bottles and recycled fibers. But it’s all very well doing everything you can for the environment when what we really need is a jacket that actually works.

Luckily, Gill’s OS2 jacket doesn’t compromise in performance, and we have remained warm and dry in some pretty intense Greek winter storms.

Material wise, there wasn’t a noticeable difference between the different jackets. They all kept us warm and dry. But our old jackets certainly weren’t made with 98% recycled materials so that was a huge bonus.

One of the things we did find a difference with was breathability. Our Gill jackets were comfortable to wear when the weather got warmer, and we didn’t get that suffocating need to rip all our layers off when the sun came out after a storm.

The Fit

One of the things we preferred about the Gill OS2 jackets is the fit. These jackets have enough room in them for you to layer up, but even when you’re not wearing layers underneath they still keep a slight shape so you don’t look like a sack!

You have really great movement while wearing them, especially compared to our old jackets. These ones felt much more comfortable while moving around the boat.

Features

There are a tonne of really useful features built into the design of the OS2 jackets and trousers. Head here to find out about them in more detail.

For us, the most notable features were the high-cut thermal collar which does exactly what you would hope, and the hand warmer pockets with adjustable PU inner seals which made a huge difference (especially when we weren’t kitted up in our sailing gloves) and we also love the abrasion resistant outer panels which feel like they’ll add extra durability to these foul weather clothes.

Overall, we’re super impressed with the OS2 jacket and trousers and can’t wait to see how well they hold up in years to come. We’ll be sure to update this post in the future.
