Chumbe Island Coral Park
This is one of the best snorkeling spots in Zanzibar and as an added bonus it is close to Stone Town. It’s an islet close by partially surrounded by reefs, and is one of the main protected areas in Zanzibar. The island actually has award winning status for its efforts in preservation and eco-tourism.

Partly for sun protection and partly for protection from jelly fish stings. Someone was stung on our trip and it looked pretty painful, though obviously the team has a full first aid kit on board to deal with it if it does happen!

Although snorkeling doesn’t tend to be quite as impressive straight off the beach, there are some places you can see underwater life without taking a tour.

It’s worth trying the snorkeling from any beaches you visit. If the bottom is just sand then you’re less likely to find that many fish, but if you can find patches of rock, coral or weed then you’re in with a better chance.
