Want to know more about Hvar before booking your stay? Here are some frequently asked questions from travellers visiting the area.

Is It Better To Stay In Hvar Or Stari Grad?

Deciding whether to stay in Hvar or Stari Grad largely depends on your personal preferences and travel plans.

Hvar is a bustling town known for its vibrant nightlife, glamorous atmosphere, and stunning beaches. It offers a wide range of activities, from partying and socializing to water sports and cultural sightseeing. Hvar’s harbor is also a popular starting point for boat excursions to the nearby Pakleni Islands.

On the other hand, Stari Grad is a tranquil and picturesque town that boasts a rich history and cultural heritage. It offers a more relaxed and traditional experience, with cobbled streets, quaint shops, and charming restaurants.

Stari Grad is also surrounded by lush vineyards and olive groves, making it an excellent destination for wine tasting and outdoor activities such as hiking and cycling.

Ultimately, the choice between Hvar and Stari Grad depends on your interests and preferences. If you prefer a lively and glamorous atmosphere with plenty of nightlife and beach activities, then Hvar might be the better choice for you.

However, if you prefer a more laid-back and authentic experience with cultural sightseeing and outdoor activities, then Stari Grad could be a better fit.

We adored both and found the mix of the two made for a perfect vacation. You could always start your holiday in the vibrant Hvar old town and make the most of the excellent restaurants and bars, and exploring some of the beautiful sights before making your way to Stari Grad for some unwinding.

How Many Days Should You Spend In Hvar?

a view over Hvar and surrounding islands
How Many Days Should You Spend In Hvar?

We thought Hvar was going to be a quick stop – perhaps a night in the old town and a few days in Stari Grad. We ended up loving it there so much that we stayed for over a week and could easily have stayed even longer if we weren’t forced to move on.

We would suggest the minimum amount of time to spend in Hvar old town would be 3 days, but you could easily fill a week or even more here with trips to the beautiful nearby islands, wine tours etc.

With three days you’d have time to visit historic sites such as the Hvar Fortress and the Franciscan Monastery, or engage in outdoor activities such as hiking, cycling, and water sports. You can also take a boat excursion to the nearby Pakleni Islands, visit local vineyards for wine tasting, or simply relax on the beach and enjoy the stunning views.

If you have more time, you can explore other parts of the island such as Stari Grad, Jelsa, and Vrboska, or take a day trip to nearby islands such as Vis, Korcula, or Brac.

If you’re keen to explore further than just Hvar old town then we would definitely suggest you say at least a week, but you could easily fill a two week vacation here.

When Is The Best Time Of Year To Visit Hvar?

The peak season for tourism in Hvar is from June to August when the weather is warm and sunny, and the island is bustling with tourists. During this time, you can enjoy the beautiful beaches, water sports, and vibrant nightlife, but you should expect higher prices and larger crowds.

If you prefer a quieter and more peaceful atmosphere, then the best time to visit Hvar would be during the shoulder season, from April to May or from September to October. The weather is still warm and sunny during this time, and the island is less crowded, allowing you to enjoy a more relaxed and authentic experience.

Additionally, prices tend to be lower during the shoulder season, making it a more affordable time to visit.

You should be aware that the sea is colder in the Spring, so if you’re a keen swimmer you might want to opt for September or October when the sea will still be at optimal temperatures.

If you are interested in outdoor activities such as hiking and cycling, then the best time to visit Hvar would be in the spring or fall when the temperatures are milder and the scenery is more beautiful.

Overall, the best time to visit Hvar depends on your travel preferences and interests, but the shoulder season, from April to May or from September to October, offers a good balance of good weather, fewer crowds, and affordable prices.

Just be aware that it can bring thunderstorms and rain showers. Every season has its compromises!

Do You Need To Rent A Car On Hvar Island?

Do You Need To Rent A Car On Hvar Island?

Renting a car on Hvar Island is not necessary, but it can be helpful if you want to explore the island at your own pace or visit some of the more remote beaches and towns which we would highly recommend.

Driving on the island is easy. Roads are well maintained (unless you go off the beaten track) and we found drivers to be pretty sensible compared with nearby Greece! We would recommend booking with Rental Cars who we always find reliable (and cheap).

Public transportation on the island is limited, and the bus schedules may not always align with your itinerary. Taxis are available, but they can be expensive, especially during the peak tourist season.

However, if you plan to stay in Hvar Town or another central location and don’t plan to explore too much, then a car rental may not be necessary.

If you want the flexibility to explore the island at your own pace and visit some of the more remote locations, then renting a car can be a good idea. However, if you plan to stay in one location and don’t plan to travel too much, then it may not be necessary.

Book with Rental Cars

Do You Need Travel Insurance?

It would irresponsible of us to recommend you don’t get travel insurance when holidaying abroad. Unfortunately, things can and do happen (and have to us!) so we always buy travel insurance whenever we leave our home country.

Medical fees can quickly add up and it’s even more if you need emergency medical care (which you certainly wouldn’t want to skip out on!)

We use Safety Wing who provide travel insurance perfect for holiday goers and digital nomads. You can even extend your insurance while on the go so you don’t have to worry if you get carried away and miss a flight (or three!)

Is Hvar A Party Town?

Is Hvar A Party Town?

Hvar old town is known for its vibrant nightlife and party scene, which makes it a popular destination for young people and those who enjoy socializing and dancing. The town boasts a wide range of bars, nightclubs, and beach clubs that offer various music genres and drinks.

During the peak tourist season, from June to August, the town can get quite busy and crowded, with partygoers flocking to the bars and nightclubs until the early hours of the morning.

We were there in August and our all night party days are well behind us, but we really enjoyed the enticing restaurants and bars playing beautiful jazz music, so there is definitely something for everyone.

Outside of summer, the town is quieter and more relaxed, making it a great destination for families and those who prefer a more laid-back atmosphere.

It’s important to note that while Hvar is known for its nightlife and party scene, there are also many other attractions and activities to enjoy, such as cultural sightseeing, outdoor activities, and culinary experiences. Consider Stari Grad as a great alternative if you like a little peace or quiet, or opt for one of the beach resorts outside of town so you have the option of either.

So, whether you’re looking for a party or a more peaceful vacation, Hvar has something to offer for everyone.

What’s The Best Way To Reach Hvar?

There are several ways to reach Hvar, depending on your starting point and travel preferences. As Hvar is an island without an airport the only way to reach here is by boat. Here are some of the most common ways to get there:

  1. By Ferry: You can take a ferry from Split or Dubrovnik to Hvar. There are several ferry companies that operate between these cities and Hvar, including Jadrolinija, Krilo and Kapetan Luka. The ferry journey takes approximately 1-2 hours, depending on your starting point.
  2. By Private Boat: Take a private boat tour from Split to Hvar and ask them to drop you off at your hotel at the end of the day. This way you can explore some of Hvars coastline in luxury and start off your vacation with a bang!

Overall, the best way to reach Hvar will depend on your starting point, travel preferences, and budget.

Which Is Nicer, Split, Or Hvar?

Hvar old town during the day with all it's nice hotels
Which Is Nicer, Split, Or Hvar?

Both Split and Hvar are beautiful destinations in their own right, each with their own unique charm and attractions. Personally, we felt that Hvar had a little of everything compared with Split which was more of a main city and all the trappings that come alongside that.

Split is a larger city and serves as the economic and cultural center of the Dalmatia region. It offers a wealth of cultural and historical attractions, including the UNESCO-listed Diocletian’s Palace, the Cathedral of St. Domnius, and the Archaeological Museum.

Split also has a vibrant atmosphere, with many restaurants, cafes, and bars, and a lively nightlife scene.

On the other hand, Hvar is a smaller, more intimate island town that is famous for its stunning beaches, crystal clear waters, and beautiful natural scenery. Hvar offers a more relaxed and laid-back atmosphere, with plenty of opportunities for outdoor activities, such as hiking, cycling, and water sports.

The town also has a rich cultural heritage, with historical attractions such as the Hvar Fortress, the Franciscan Monastery, and the Stari Grad Plain.

Ultimately, whether Split or Hvar is “nicer” depends on your travel preferences and interests. If you enjoy history, culture, and a lively atmosphere, then Split may be the better choice.

If you prefer a more relaxed and natural environment with stunning beaches and outdoor activities, then Hvar may be the better choice.
